Impacts
- Strong winds can toss loose objects and damage trees, which may result in local power outages.
- Moderate rain can lead to a sudden rise in stream levels and localized flooding, particularly due to the recent Atmospheric Rivers that have heightened stream responses.
Certainty
- Weather Pattern: High – There is a high level of confidence that a low-pressure system, the remnants of Typhoon Pulasan, will bring strong winds and rain to parts of the B.C. Coast from Thursday morning through Thursday night.
- Strong Winds: High – Very strong winds near or exceeding warning criteria is anticipated for North & Central Coast, Haida Gwaii and Northern Vancouver Island, particularly Thursday afternoon/evening.
- Precipitation: Moderate – A moderate to heavy swath of rain will stretch from Prince Rupert down to Bute Inlet with the heaviest rainfall anticipated to again fall over the Central Coast.
Key Points
- The saturated soils from recent Atmospheric Rivers, combined with strong winds and additional rain,
could lead tree damage resulting in localized power outages. The increased foliage makes trees more prone to uprooting, especially since this is the coast’s first wind event in several months. - The strongest wind gusts will likely be felt over exposed coastal sections Thursday afternoon/evening.
Southeasterly/southerly winds will persist during the day before switching to southwesterlies Thursday near midnight. It should be noted that wind direction may vary as the low cuts from Haida Gwaii to the North Coast Thursday night.
Wind Forecast:
- Central Coast (including Bella Bella),Haida Gwaii & Northern Vancouver Island:
Southerly/southeasterly 80-90 km/h gusting to 100-110, the strongest winds will begin to taper
off early Friday morning. - North Coast (including Prince Rupert): Southeasterly/easterly 60 km/h gusting to 90 beginning
Thursday afternoon then switching to westerly by Friday morning. - Northern sections of East Vancouver Island (including Campbell River):
Southeasterly winds 60 km/h gusting 80 Thursday late morning until near midnight.
Precipitation Forecast (Thursday and Thursday night) :
- Central Coast (including Bella Bella):
50-75mm except 100+mm over higher terrain.
Additional 5-20mm Friday as rain tapers to scattered showers over the day. - North Coast:
