From August 24 to September 5, 2026, Ocean Wise will conduct humpback whale research primarily in Chatham Sound.

Researchers will use drones to assess the whales’ body condition and overall health and collect environmental DNA from whale flukeprints following feeding events. These non-invasive methods will help researchers better understand humpback whale health, genetics, habitat use, and feeding ecology.

The research team will be aboard the vessel Skanna. If you see them on the water, you are welcome to approach the team and ask questions—they will be happy to speak with you.
