Notice to Lax Kw’alaams Members,

It has come to the attention of Mayor and Council the Gitxaala Nation recently filed litigation in British Columbia Supreme Court against Canada, British Columbia, and the Prince Rupert Port Authority. In their claim, Gitxaala allege they have Aboriginal rights and title in the Prince Rupert harbour and port area. It is regrettable the traditional leaders of Gitxaala have endorsed this action.

In accordance with our traditional law and protocol, Lax Kw’alaams and our Allied Tribes have consistently maintained our territorial boundary, which includes the Prince Rupert harbour and port area. Our territorial boundary was accepted and agreed to by all Tsimshian tribes, including the Gitxaala Nation, through the historic Tsimshian Tribal Council.

Mayor and Council have very serious concerns about Gitxaala Nation’s claim to our territory, and we wish to inform the community and membership that Lax Kw’alaams will be taking strong action in response to Gitxaala Nation’s allegations.

On behalf of Lax Kw’alaams Mayor and Council
