Lax Kw’alaams Fisheries wishes to maintain a cooperative and collaborative management relationship with DFO to support the orderly fulfilment of Section 35.1 of the Canadian Constitution. However, the current management practices DFO has employed in 2019 has resulted in the absence of cooperation and collaboration.

Meetings were held on August 1st and 2nd in Lax Kw’alaams and Prince Rupert, which provided concerned members an opportunity to weigh in on the current information provided by DFO, and the infringement on Section 35.1 fisheries. The majority of those in attendance feel the need to exercise their inherent right to fish, considering other fisheries are currently open and targeting Skeena salmon.

Lax Kw’alaams Fisheries is considering a coordinated fishery for Lax Kw’alaams members. Details of the date, time and location(s) of a coordinated Lax Kw’alaams fishery will be determined when appropriate information is received by all member fishers. Any further questions or concerns can be directed to Russell Mather and Bill Shepert.
