Member Support Needed at Lax Kw’alaams Court Hearing in Vancouver – June 10th to 14th 2024
Lax Kw’alaams has an upcoming court hearing scheduled from June 10th – June 14th in Vancouver, BC at the Federal Court House. The purpose of the hearing is to review our application for a judicial review over the lack of proper consultation in the endorsement of the Network Action Plan for the Northern Shelf Bioregion Marine Protected Areas Network (NSB MPAn). All Lax Kw’alaams members are encouraged to attend to show our community’s concern. To confirm attendance or for more information please contact Bill Shepert at [email protected].
Background on Legal Case: The NSB MPAn is a proposed network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) that would stretch from North Vancouver Island to the Alaskan-Canadian border—an area of 102,000 square kilometres. Over the past five years, Lax Kw’alaams has become increasingly concerned about the potential impact of this project on our fishing interests, and we have pushed back on the structure and legitimacy of the NSB MPAn process.
Lax Kw’alaams is going to court to defend our right to be consulted on the establishment of MPAs which could significantly impact our commercial fishing interests, which is central to our community well-being, economy, and way of life. We are seeking a strong courtroom presence from Lax Kw’alaams members to support our efforts.
