Title: Biologist II

Hours of work and Term: Permanent, Full time
Summary of Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of Fisheries and Aquatics, the Biologist II position is responsible to participate in the operations of the department using sound scientific principles to protect and enhance Lax Kw’alaams marine resources to enhance and sustain fish stocks according the Lax Kw’alaams direction. The post holder must work collegially with all departments and partners, Lax Kw’alaams community members, working groups, special interest groups and businesses.
Formal Qualifications
- Must have an Undergraduate Degree from a Recognized University in Biological Science plus a minimum of 3 years experience in a related field
- First Aid certification
- Drivers Licence

- Ability to trouble shoot scientific methodology in the field
- Knowledge of conducting scientific work in fisheries stock science and fisheries productivity science
Duties and Responsibilities
- Working with Senior staff to design, plan and undertake complex scientific projects to create enhanced knowledge in fisheries science
- Liaise with Senior Biologist and other staff to ensure successful implementation of field work
- On site supervision and training of biologists, field technicians and others as necessary
- Ensure data collection and field sheets are completed in the prescribed manner
- Participate in field assessments and data acquisition of biological samples
- Collecting, processing and shipments of biological samples for assessment were directed
- Ensuring sampling supplies and data sheets are sufficient to perform field work
- Conduct quality control and assurance principles from projects as required
- Review of field staff time sheets for approval
- Provide authoritative scientific advice and recommend strategies to support healthy fisheries to various organizations
- Liaise with governmental agencies and contractors on a project specific basis
- Collaborate and draft technical reports for approval
- Review and edit reports produced by fisheries personnel
- Prepare and present findings of field research in collaboration with fisheries staff as required
- Prepare and program and project proposals for fisheries science projects as requested
- General office duties (letters, emails, memos, preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual reports)
- Participate in meetings of the Lax Kw’alaams Fisheries Department and staff meetings as required
- Other duties that may be applicable to the position of Biologist II
