The Lax Kw’alaams Band has an immediate opportunity for a full-time 1-year term position as a Water & Wastewater Operator Trainee.

The purpose of these opportunities is to help prepare the employees for certifications as Water and Wastewater Operator through learning the fundamentals of water and wastewater treatment plant operations. After instruction and orientation, the employee will be expected to carry out routine duties performed by a senior operator. He/she will be responsible for performing tasks related to installing, operating, and repairing the water distribution, water treatment, and wastewater collection systems. You will also have the ability to work, learn and progress in a career-type position.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to: 

  • Perform scheduled maintenance of all waterworks and sewage collection system components. 
  • Support the water sampling program, when necessary, by taking water samples and interpreting results. 
  • Ensure work is performed safely and according to established work standards and applicable safety regulations.
  • Regularly monitor gauges, meters, and control panels and adjust any variations within the system’s operating conditions, if/when necessary, under the advisement of the senior operator. 
  • Ensure the safe operation and maintenance of all related tools and equipment. 
  • Maintain records and prepare reports for water and wastewater systems. 
  • Assist with water and sewer service installations. Maintain shift logs and records meter and gauge readings. 
  • Respond and professionally address all public concerns about the water and wastewater system. 
  • Being part of the rotating on-call schedule is required for this position which includes responding to after-hour calls within a 20-minute response time and taking corrective action as required.

Education, Experience and Knowledge: 

  • Grade 12 Education. 
  • Must be willing and able to register and complete Level 1 or 2 of the Water and Wastewater Program funded through the Band. This includes fulfilling all the requirements needed to obtain these certifications, including experience hours.
  • Willing to maintain certification through continuing education. 
  • EOCP Water Distribution Operator’s Certificate (Level 1 or higher) is an asset. 
  • Wastewater Collection Operator’s Certificate (Level 1). Chlorine Handling Certificate. 
  • WHMIS Certificate. Minimum First-Aid training (Level 1) is an asset. 
  • Confined Space Entry and Certification Awareness. Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certificate.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions and be physically able to lift up to 50 lbs. 
  • Be on time for all assigned shifts or shifts you agreed to cover for another staff member. 
  • Ability to demonstrate a commitment to embodying a personal addiction-free lifestyle.  
  • The successful candidate will be asked to provide a current Criminal Record Check, including as a condition of employment.
  • The successful candidate must be fully COVID vaccinated and remain in full compliance with all public health orders and  Band policies throughout their employment.

Compensation & Benefits 

  • Wages will be $ 25.45 per hour, depending on training, experience and certifications.  
  • This is a Bargaining Unit position and is open to all genders.
