Teacher Assistant (3 Full – Time Positions available)

Reporting to: School Principal
The Lax Kw’alaams Band and the Lax Kw’alaams Wap Suwilaawksa School have an exciting and immediate opening for three (3) Full-Time Teacher Assistants starting at the end of August, 2025. As a key member of the team, this role is responsible for providing assistance to students through the implementation of educational programs as directed by the teachers. You will contribute to the educational plans by providing input in the design of programs. You will also assist teachers in student assessment and evaluation through observation, recording, and/or data collection.
Under the direction of the assigned Teacher and School Principal, the Teaching Assistant is an integral member of the school team and performs duties in accordance with the mandate and priorities of the Lax Kw’alaams Band and Lax Kw’alaams Wap Suwilaawksa School. You are responsible for assisting classroom teachers in dealing with situations inherent in providing individualized education to students.
Responsibilities:
General
Core Duties
- Working with individuals or small groups under the supervision of teaching staff
- Assisting pupils in understanding instructions and supporting independent learning and inclusion
- Supporting the teacher in managing behaviour and maintaining pupil focus
- Supporting pupils with both social and emotional well-being
- Preparing and clearing up learning environment and resources
- Recording pupil data
- Supporting learning through play
- Assisting with the supervision of breaktimes
- Escorting pupils on educational visits
- Invigilating exams and tests
- Encouraging independence
Planning & Organization Duties
- Implementing planned learning activities/programmes (as agreed with the teacher)
- Participating in planning and evaluating learning activities with the teacher, providing feedback on pupil progress and behaviour
- Supporting the teacher in monitoring, assessing, and recording pupil progress/activities
- Providing feedback to pupils on attainment and progress (under teacher guidance)
- Supporting learning by arranging/providing resources for lessons/activities under the direction of the teacher
- Sharing information about pupils with other staff, parents/carers, internal and external agencies, as appropriate
- Understanding and supporting independent learning and inclusion of all pupils as required
- Assisting in the development of individual development plans for pupils
- Supporting the work of other Teaching Assistants
- Supporting the use of the curriculum
- Selecting, preparing, and clearing away classroom materials and learning areas
- Supporting pupils in developing and implementing their own personal and social development
- Monitoring and managing classroom stock and supplies
Note: Perform all Other duties within the scope of the position and as requested by your supervisors. These will be according to the employee’s range of skills, competence, training and experience or part of a training/ development plan.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
- A Grade 12 Diploma, or
- A Grade 12 Diploma and a minimum of a 10-month college/certificate program in teaching assistance, educational assistance or another social science, or
- An Early Childhood Educator Certificate
- A valid first-aid certificate or willing to obtain.
Experience
- At least 1 year of experience in a related field.
- Previous classroom experience.
- Experience in a First Nation school setting.
- Related experience working with children/youth.
Competency
- A general knowledge of the educational system, learning techniques, socialization processes, attitudes, values, aspirations and expectations of the Lax Kw’alaams Band and the Lax Kw’alaams Wap Suwilaawksa School.
- Proven record of professionalism, punctuality, flexibility, dependability, and reliability.
- Strong communication skills, both verbally and written.
- Strong computer skills with Windows, Microsoft Suite proficiency and a willingness to learn new software programs.
- Strict confidentiality requirements must be respectful of the needs and privacy and maintain confidentiality regarding the Band and School.
- Demonstrates a strong aptitude for learning and a consistent drive for personal and professional development.
- Able to deal with people’s sensitivity tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times.
- Highly motivated and able to work independently; must be able to schedule and prioritize work.
- Ability to demonstrate a commitment to embodying a personal addiction-free lifestyle.
Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Physical Demand
- You may have to spend long hours sitting and using office equipment and computers and attending meetings.
- You may have to spend long hours standing when teaching a class or assisting in other school related activities.
Mental Demands
- You will have to complete several tasks and responsibilities at one time and must be prepared to deal with emergencies and stressful situations at any time.

- Valid Driver’s License (Class 5) is an asset
Classification/Pay Scale
- As per the B.C. General Employees’ Union Collective Agreement, Education level and Years of experience.
- $21.25 – $27.86 per hour
