The Lax Kw’alaams Fisheries Department through the Lax Kw’alaams Fishing Enterprises LTD has an immediate opening for a contract Research Associate position.
Job Summary
As part of its stewardship initiatives, the Lax Kw’alaams Fisheries Department successfully obtained funding under the Indigenous Watershed Initiative Program (IWI). The program will aim to build an understanding of the current health and identification of high value streams in the territories. The three (3) broader goals of the project are as follows:
- Gather Scientific and Indigenous Ecological Data
- expand the application of Ts’msyen Adaawx to support stewardship
- Support ongoing aquatic related governance development through community meetings, data analysis and TUS Information
Within this program, Lax Kw’alaams aims to undertake its research with a combined knowledge approaches utilizing Ts’msyen and other methodologies.
The Lax Kw’alaams Fisheries department is seeking a Research Associate to work alongside the Fisheries and Lands departments to develop a research framework to support the above program goals. The framework will also expand on Ts’msyen protocols that can be utilized within its stewardship efforts and inform approaches to cultural integration.
Roles and Responsibilities:
The Research will support the development and application of a research methodology to expand the application of Ts’msyen creation stories to support stewardship efforts. Role and responsibilities within the position will include:
I. Collaborate with Lax Kw’alaams members to gather Ts’msyen stories and Traditional Knowledge
II. Produce detailed reports summarizing research findings and present the results to managers and community members
III. Provide support in organizing community engagement events and workshops related to the research
I. Attend relevant workshops and training associated with the technical development of story work
II. Support the translation of Indigenous law from Ts’msyen stories (Adaawx) into case law from unpublished sources
Skills & Qualifications:
I. High School Diploma or Some Post-Secondary is considered an asset
II. Other relevant skills, experiences and education such as courses in administration, research, First Nations studies, or extended time learning Ts’msyen stories
III. Willingness to learn new skills, be self-initiated and ability to work with a team
IV. Strong organizational skills, and interest in Ts’msyen stories
V. A member of the Lax Kw’alaams Band
VI. Valid driver’s licence
Position Duration and Wage
This position will be an 8-month term contract with a possibility to move into a full-time position within the Lax Kw’alaams Fisheries Department.
Wage $25/hr minimum and dependent on experience and qualifications
