Reconciliation Communications and Engagement Coordinator


The Lax Kw’alaams Band has an opening for an Uks Baask Communications and Engagement Coordinator. Under the direction and supervision of the Director of Reconciliation, the successful candidate will provide strong communications and administrative support to the team. This is a 1-year full-time term position.

Position Summary

  • Prepares coordinates and advises on the communications plan and community engagement and membership activities of Lax Kw’alaams and more specifically on Reconciliation related activities, matters, goals, and objectives.
  • General administrative, communications, and logistical duties.
  • Internal and external focused position that will liaise and build strong, neutral and non-partisan communications on Reconciliation with members and various other parties, organizations, and individuals.
  • Coordinates, facilitates, and participates in meetings and workshops, and assists in meeting operational and organization goals.
  • Maintains confidentiality and interacts with leadership, management, membership, and the public in an exceptionally respectful and courteous manner.
  • Provides a broad range of communications, logistical, and administrative services (drafting communications and engagement content, and organizing events).
  • Distributes information and updates to Lax Kw’alaams members through various official channels.
    Responsibilities and Duties
  • Drafts, finalizes, and publishes Reconciliation communications content and materials as assigned, especially for Lax Kw’alaams website and social media.
  • Works with team to develop and implement a multi-year communications plan, media, and social media plan, and more specifically on Reconciliation content.
  • Develops and distributes information using a variety of media including, but not limited to, social media content, brochures, handouts, publications, correspondence, and newsletters.
  • Coordinates and facilitates meetings, workshops, and social community events, including room setup/tear down, catering bookings, travel bookings, and distributes agendas, minutes, and information packages.
  • Coordinates various community gatherings, trade shows, special projects, and other special events as directed.
  • Acts as a liaison between Lax Kw’alaams, membership, and other groups as required – manages incoming inquiries and requests for information through diligent data entry, record management, meeting minutes and records of decisions and direction.
  • Stays up to date on local, provincial and national Reconciliation, self-government, and treaty issues, and regularly monitors all media and social media coverage of other relevant Reconciliation, self government, and treaty tables.
  • Ensures that all business and operational communications and transactions are conducted in a responsible, confidential, and ethical manner.
  • Faithfully, neutrally, and in a fully non-partisan manners, follows communications instructions in accordance with internal policies and procedures.
  • Exercises strong time and task management; manages calendars and schedules appointments efficiently; and promptly handles phone calls and emails, answering inquiries, resolving concerns, and managing incoming and outgoing communications.
  • Drafts, prepares, or reviews documents, prioritizing workflow, and level of importance.
  • Maintains strong communications and reporting practices with the Director of Reconciliation.
  • Commits to ongoing training and skills development as required.
    Qualifications
    Education and Professional Certifications
  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in communications, media, arts, business administration, public administration or another relevant degree or diploma.
  • Substantial equivalent experience and skills will be considered in lieu of a postsecondary diploma or degree.
    Cultural Awareness
  • Knowledge of and respect for Tsimshian history, practices, teachings, language, values, and beliefs is of critical importance.
  • Commits to learning, respecting, and faithfully following traditional protocols for respecting elders and hereditary leaders.
  • Ability to understand and speak Sm’algyax will be considered a definite asset.
    Knowledge/Experience
  • Minimum of three years’ experience working in an administrative position preferably within a communication, government, consulting or legal environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat is essential – proficiency in graphic and image design software and platforms a definite asset.
  • Experience in communications and community engagement a strong asset.
  • Ability to create culturally safe spaces and environments, and applies trauma informed community and engagement services is essential.
    Abilities and Skills
  • Excellent writing, presentation, and facilitation skills and abilities.
  • Exceptional organizational and time-management skills is essential, and ability to prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly in a rapidly changing environment with excellent attention to detail is essential.
  • Excellent interpersonal, liaising and networking skills.
  • Exhibits initiative, competence, discernable discretion, and self-direction – must be analytical with strong attention to detail.
  • Proactive problem solver with excellent conflict resolution skills.
  • Proven ability to work with people of diverse education, cultural, and language backgrounds.
  • Commitment to maintaining strict confidentiality is essential.
  • Treats colleagues and people with courtesy, respect, and ensures all requested inquiries are provided in a professional and timely manner.
    Submission Deadline

  • Salary $ 75,000.
  • This is a Bargaining Unit position and is open to all genders.
