Lax Kw’alaams First Nation Department of Lands Resources and Stewardship is building an integrated natural resources program and requires a Rangers to begin the process of monitoring for compliance in Lax Kw’alaams Territory. The ideal candidate will be a Lax Kw’alaams Band Member or culturally affiliated Tsimshian people. The Ranger will work to ensure that there is effective conservation and stewardship of Lax Kw’alaams resources and serving as an ambassador to the public on issues related to conservation and environmental protection.
Reporting to Director of Lands, Resource and Stewardship or the Marine Patrol Fisheries Manager, the Ranger plays a role in environmental protection and the stewardship of natural resources to be enjoyed by future generations of Lax Kw’alaams people. The efforts of this position will support a sustainable renewable resource economy and harvesting of traditional products. It is anticipated that the candidates would work longer shifts when part of a field program, hours may be irregular.
Duties and Responsibilities include but not be limited to:
- Planning and conducting field patrols in Lax Kw’alaams Territory (land and sea)
- Inspecting and investigating activities for adherence to relevant laws, regulations and policies.
- Observe, document and collect evidence of non-compliance.
- Issue various departmental licenses and permits related to resource management.
- Collect, collate, update and maintain databases and computer files.
- Prepare written reports documenting activities, information, data and samples.
- Respond to public inquiries and requests for information.
- Ensure routine maintenance and care of equipment.
- Provide advice to Departmental Management on specific resource management issues.
- Other related duties as required.
Education, Experience, Qualifications:
- Diploma in Natural Resources from a recognized post-secondary institution, or a combination of education and related work experience
- Navigational skills
- Class 5 Driver’s License
- Knowledge of land use and resource use in the in North coast BC area
- Oral communication skills
- Small Vessel Operator program and/or Marine Emergency First Aid an asset.
- This is a position of trust and a Criminal Record Check is required
Compensation & Benefits
- Wages will be $ 23.00 per hour
- This is a Bargaining Unit position and is open to all genders
