The Lax Kw’alaams Band and the Lax Kw’alaams Wap Suwilaawksa School have an exciting opening for a Full – Time Physical Education Teacher (Kindergarten to Grade 12) starting at the end of August, 2025. As a key member of the team, this role is responsible for providing valuable education to students, fostering a positive learning environment, and supporting their academic and personal development.

Under the direction of the School Principal, the Physical Education Teacher is an integral member of the school team and performs duties in accordance with the mandate and priorities of the Lax Kw’alaams Band and the Lax Kw’alaams Wap Suwilaawksa School. You will support students in the area of your experience, qualification, and/or certifications. This includes developing, updating, planning, and implementing educational programs and delivering engaging lessons on a variety of physical activities, sports, nutrition, health topics and more.

Responsibilities:
General

Administration

  • Promote the Lax Kw’alaams Wap Suwilaawksa Mission Statement.
  • Designing and administering tests, quizzes, and other assessments to evaluate student understanding, progress and physical wellness.
  • Regularly report each student’s progress to the parent(s)/guardian(s) and the Principal through report cards and other means.
  • Submit a ten-month plan to the Principal in September or as required. The plan may be reviewed at the annual Performance Evaluation session.
  • Order supplies and have on hand prepared materials, texts, and resources for the class.
  • Report maintenance and repair items to the Principal and/or designate
  • Complete and maintain all assigned student records. (i.e., IEP, documentation, progress report, behaviour plan, etc.), and attendance monitoring, including late arrivals and early exits.

Relationship Building and Networking

  • Help each student build their self-esteem while teaching them how to respect and work cooperatively with others.
  • Work continually to strengthen ties with the school’s educational partners, the community at large, fellow staff members, parents, and students, recognizing the role of each of these groups in the child’s education.
  • Model behaviour for students to aid in their understanding of wisdom, love, respect, bravery, honesty, humility, truth, and other teachings.
  • Maintain goodwill with general educators.

Results Orientation

  • Instill a love of learning while helping the students to recognize that learning is a gradual, lifelong process.
  • Ensure that the learning environment for students is safe, healthy, and secure.
  • Provide direct instruction for specific short-term needs.
  • Use assessment techniques, including curriculum-based assessment.
  • Teach the BC Curriculum as set out by the BC Ministry of Education standards.
  • Recommend appropriate accommodations, modifications, and instructional strategies for students.
  • Individualize programs to assist students with Special Needs.
  • Advocate for all students with special learning needs.
  • Meet with the Principal and/or Education Manager, School Counsellor, Teacher Assistant, Language Resource, and Cultural teacher regularly to ensure that the student’s needs are understood and being met.
  • Assist in maintaining current student profile by accessing qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Develop and implement transition plans.
  • Treat students equally and fairly.

Service Orientation

  • Help identify students who need Special Education assistance.
  • Provide support to students who need extra help
  • Be responsible for the initiation, development, implementation (updating and monitoring) and review of the designated students’ Individualized Education Plans (IEP) in collaboration with classroom teachers
  • Assist in the development of enrichment materials.
  • Gather data useful for planning instructional programs, modifying existing programs, and communicating with others.
  • Participate in extra-curricular activities and, at times, help organize those activities.
  • Maintain order and discipline in their classroom and throughout the school and follow the school timetable and schedule as approved by the BC Ministry of Education standards.
  • Seek and employ teaching approaches and materials that will enable each student to attain their highest level of achievement and development.
  • Ensure students are always supervised according to the policies and legislation in place at the school.
  • Ensure that the learning environment for all Learners is safe, healthy, and secure.
  • Maintain (regular communication) contact with the Learner’s parents/guardians or family.

Team Work

  • Work together with other members of the teaching staff and Principal to select current, appropriate teaching materials.
  • Work closely with others on staff to formulate an appropriate program of studies before the beginning of each school year.
  • Collaborate with the regular education teacher in adapting the curriculum, providing appropriate modifications, ensuring the implementation of modifications, and assessing the overall progress of the Learner.

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Maintain confidentiality as per the Band and school’s policy guidelines.
  • Adhere to Administrative standards, policies and procedures;
  • Bring to the attention of the School Principal if practices are not consistent with the current knowledge of acceptable professional standards;
  • May work a flexible 35 hours per week as determined by the School Principal and in accordance with the needs of the school and the BCGEU Collective Agreement.

Note: Perform all Other duties within the scope of the position and as requested by the School Principal. These will be according to the employee’s range of skills, competence, training and experience or part of a training/ development plan.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • An acceptable five-year B Ed degree or an acceptable four-year baccalaureate degree plus an acceptable professional year of teacher preparation; or,
  • An acceptable four-year B Ed degree plus either an acceptable graduate degree or an acceptable integrated program (note Regulation 4.05); or,
  • An acceptable three-year baccalaureate degree plus either an acceptable professional year of teacher training or an acceptable one-year B Ed and either an acceptable integrated program (note Regulation 4.05) or another acceptable degree; or,
  • An acceptable three-year baccalaureate degree plus an acceptable two-year B Ed; or,
  • A program of five or more years of study which contains not less than 150 acceptable semester credits (or their equivalent) including an acceptable degree and an acceptable professional year, and which meets the requirement for Professional Certification by the Teacher Regulation Branch of the Ministry of Education (see Transition Rules 6.00), plus an acceptable graduate degree.

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years as a teacher
  • Minimum of 3 years as a Physical Education Teacher or related role
  • Minimum of 3 years in related role

Competency

  • Highly motivated and able to work independently; must be able to schedule and prioritize work.
  • Ability to multi-task and establish priorities.
  • Able to deal with people’s sensitivity tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times.
  • Ability to demonstrate a commitment to embodying a personal addiction-free lifestyle.
  • Thorough knowledge of education principles, student supervision, curriculum development and program evaluation techniques.
  • Working knowledge of Ministry Curriculum and Assessment Documents.
  • Experience working within a First Nation educational setting with Indigenous Services Canada (ISC).
  • Ability to work in a unique cultural environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; be a positive role model.
  • Emergency CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Strong computer skills with Windows, Microsoft Suite proficiency and a willingness to learn new software programs.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to write clear and accurate reports.
  • Demonstrate tact, diplomacy and sound judgment.
  • Professionalism, punctuality, flexibility, dependability, and reliability.
  • Strict confidentiality requirements must be respectful of the needs and privacy and maintain confidentiality regarding the Band and School.

Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Physical Demand

  • You may have to spend long hours standing, running, and other physical activities when teaching a class or assisting in other school related activities.
  • You may have to spend some hours sitting and using office equipment and computers and attending meetings.

Mental Demands

  • You will have to complete several tasks and responsibilities at one time and must be prepared to deal with emergencies and stressful situations at any time.

Classification/Pay Scale

  • As per the B. C. General Employees’ Union Collective Agreement, Teacher Qualification Service Category and Years of experience.
  • $62,937.17 to $113,319.13 per year
