The Lax Kw’alaams Band has an immediate opening for a temporary term, full-time Education Coordinator. The position will be 6 months to 1 year term.
Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
- Maintain education files and ensure proper record keeping including data entry to the database to record student history.
- Submit reports to ISC (such as nominal roll and PSSR-Post Secondary Student Report), as required and requested.
- Apply for grants/proposals to get education programs in Lax Kw’alaams and work closely with the instructor(s) and institutes.
- Complete the required interim & final reports for successful grants/proposals.
- Apply for grants/proposals for the Wap Suwilaawksa to get additional funds for the school.
- Work closely with the grade 12 students as they prepare to enter post-secondary.
- Supervise the summer student program (including applying for funds, monitoring students, completing final reports).
- Assist students with applying for bursaries/scholarships (e.g., availability list support letter, etc.)
- Oversee the Lax Kw’alaams learning center, including staff and janitor.
- Follow through on deadlines for funding applications and liaise with applicants on application progress.
- Assemble (prepare financial summary) and present student application packages to the Education Manager for approval.
- Administer the Band education policies and procedures and bring forward any concerns (student performance, including but not limited to, attendance, reporting and performance) to the Education Manager.
- Release monthly cheques and address any student concerns, as approved by administration.
- Prepare all letters of acceptance or otherwise for funding purposes.
- Liaise with Post-Secondary Institutions regarding student sponsorship regarding Tuition fees, books and supplies.
- Maintain a projected and current budget/expense on programs on computerized spreadsheets.
- Liaise between students/teachers/counselors/administrators/parents/institutions concerning sponsored students.
- Perform other tasks within the scope of the position.
Education, Experience and Knowledge:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or a similar field is preferred.
- A combination of education and experience will be considered Knowledge of Education Institutions is an asset or willingness to learn.
- Ability to maintain individual files and records.
- Experience with computers and using related documents (word, excel, etc.)
- Understanding Tsimshian history, culture and contemporary issues would be an asset.
- Highly motivated and able to work independently; must be able to schedule and prioritize work.
- Able to deal with people sensitivity, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times.
- Ability to demonstrate a commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
- Valid BC driver’s license or in the process of getting one.
- Provide a current Criminal Record Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Screening as a condition of employment.
Compensation & Benefits:
- Wages will be $33.20 per hour.
- This is a union position and is open to all genders.
