The Lax Kw’alaams Band requires a permanent full-time Director in the Department of Lands, Resources and Stewardship. The Director will provide strategic and operational oversight and guidance as it relates to land management, environment, consultation and natural resources. This role will provide expertise, strategic program direction, and operational implementation for short and long-term strategies related to the broad categories of lands, fishery research and stewardship, environment, consultation, permitting and resource development.
Duties and Responsibilities include but not be limited to:
- Provide leadership to ensure that the department meets and exceeds established goals and objectives and that they are consistent with the goals, objectives, direction and mandate.
- Receive, track, manage, assess and respond to project applications from Provincial and Federal authorities.
- Represents Lax Kw’alaams interests throughout the provincial and federal environmental review and assessment processes occurring within the Lax Kw’alaams territory.
- Determine the need for specific technical skills from contractors, develop RFPs and review proposals submitted; hire contractors and oversee their work.
- Under the direction of the CAO and leadership, undertake and implement reorganization and of the department.
- Contribute to the ongoing development and implementation of Lax Kw’alaams land and marine use plans.
- Contribute to the development of Lax Kw’alaams policies for land and natural resource management to further guide project proponents and regulators operating on Lax Kw’alaams territory.
- Monitor and ensure compliance-related activities associated with land and natural resources transactions are being reviewed and best practices implemented.
- Drafting reports, letters, and other written responses to proponents, or federal, provincial government agencies.
- Provide effective supervision of staff. Manage the recruitment, selection, appraisal and development of staff.
- Secure ongoing and new departmental funding opportunities.
- Implement the HR Manual and Collective Agreement terms.
- Perform all other tasks within the scope of the position, as assigned.
Preferred Education, Experience and Knowledge:
- 10 years of related work experience
- Experience with archaeology, environment, cultural materials, traditional land use related experience relevant to the position
- Professional experience in Industry and working around heavy equipment
- Safety orientated mind frame
- Understanding of safety practices within British Columbia;
- Experience conducting safe work
- Irregular hours and long working days are expected
- Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing with Lax Kw’alaams Lands Department and Industry if needed
- Must be comfortable working in remote areas and in all-weather field conditions
- Valid BC drivers’ license
- Clear Criminal Record Check
