Reporting to: Recreation Director

The Lax Kw’alaams Recreation Centre has an exciting and immediate opening for a Casual Brighter Future worker. As a key member of the team, this role is responsible for delivering Brighter Futures programs and services in a culturally safe, respectful, and inclusive environment. This role requires adherence to all current Brighter Futures policies, procedures, and program standards while supporting the health, well-being, and positive development of youth and young adults in the community, ages 7 to 29.

Responsibilities:
General

• Actively participate in and support all Brighter Futures program activities during each shift, including community events and collaborative initiatives with other departments
• Build positive, respectful, and supportive relationships with youth participating in Brighter Futures programming and youth throughout the Lax Kw’alaams community
• Empower youth through reflective, strengths-based practices that encourage personal growth, resilience, and self-determination
• Encourage and support youth to become active, engaged members of the Lax Kw’alaams community
• Serve as a welcoming, approachable, and trusted point of contact for youth, providing encouragement, guidance, and support when needed
• Maintain professional relationships with youth by upholding appropriate confidentiality, ethical standards, and professional boundaries at all times
• Assist fellow Youth Workers in planning, organizing, and facilitating group and one-on-one activities
• Plan and facilitate recreational, educational, cultural, wellness, and life-skills programs and workshops
• Work collaboratively as part of a team and independently to provide a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all participants
• Identify, respond to, and report any health, safety, or safeguarding concerns in a timely manner
• Facilitate conflict resolution between youth using positive communication and restorative approaches
• Demonstrate professionalism, responsibility, integrity, compassion, empathy, and sound judgment in all interactions
• Facilitate, or be willing to receive training to facilitate, Cultural Harvesting, Traditional Arts, Mental Health, and other culturally relevant programs
• Maintain accurate participant records, activity logs, and statistical data to support program reporting, evaluation, and ongoing program development
• Communicate effectively and respectfully with youth, families, community members, professionals, and partner agencies, including discussing sensitive or emotionally challenging topics with discretion and cultural awareness
• Attend and actively participate in team meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities
• Ensure all program materials, equipment, and spaces are cleaned, organized, and safely stored following each program or activity
• Travel with youth for up to two weeks at a time to participate in cultural, educational, and recreational activities, such as Canoe Journey, Seaweed Camp, conferences, and other approved excursions
• Perform other tasks within the scope of the position

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education

• High School Diploma (or working to obtain)
• Post-secondary education in Youth Work, Child and Youth Care, Recreation, Education, Indigenous Studies, or a related field (Asset)
• First Aid and CPR Certificate (Asset or willing to be trained)

Experience

• Previous experience working with youth ages 7 to 29 (Asset)
• Previous experience in cultural, educational, or support setting (Asset)
• Previous experience facilitating youth programs, workshops, activities, or community events (Asset)

Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Physical Demand

• Safely lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs
• Ability to sit, stand, crouch, bend, and remain physically active while participating in activities with youth
• Ability to sit for extended periods of time as required

Mental Demands

• You will have to complete several tasks and responsibilities at one time and must be prepared to deal with emergencies and stressful situations at any time
• Ability to assess situations rapidly and determine the appropriate course of action during emergencies, often under pressure.

• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License (not required, asset)

Classification/Pay Scale

• $25.72
• As per the Canadian Union of Public Employees’ Local 2365 Collective Agreement
