Title: Fisheries Biologist II
Hours of Work and Term: Permanent, full-time
Summary of Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of Fisheries and Aquatics, the Fisheries Biologist II is responsible for participating in the operations of the department using sound scientific principles to protect and enhance Lax Kw’alaams’ marine resources to ensure and sustain aquatic resources according to Lax Kw’alaams’ direction. The successful candidate must work collegially with all Lax Kw’ alaams departments, partners, community members, working groups and businesses.
Formal Qualifications
- The preferred candidate will have a master’s degree in Biological Sciences from an accredited Canadian University with a minimum of five years of experience in a Science or Natural resources-related field
- Or applicants with a Bachelor of Science with a minimum of 10 years of experience
- Must have a valid BC driver’s licence
Operational Skills
- Ability to take direction and professionally perform duties in a timely manner
- Experience working with First Nations Bands or other First Nations organizations’ issues and concerns
- Demonstrated practical experience in fisheries research and analytical skills (data collection, compilation, and analysis)
- Demonstrated project management and implementation skills, problem-solving skills, and infield trouble shooting
- Excellent communication (verbal and written – technical or scientific writing and grant funding applications)
- Demonstrated experience in fish and aquatic field data collection and lab analysis
- Project management experience, including financial and strategic planning and management of project milestones
- Proficient use of various office-based software, including Microsoft Office Suite, statistical software, and other technologies
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and tight timelines
- Must be able to work as part of a team but also individually, where required
Work Environment: Fisheries biologists will work in a variety of settings, including:
- Field: collecting samples, conducting research
- Laboratory: analyzing samples and conducting experiments
- Office: writing reports, statistical analysis and applications for funding,
