British Columbia.

Position Summary: The Family Cultural Worker will play an integral role in promotion of the Tsimshian culture to families at risk with the child welfare system, from their community. This role will be a holistic approach to social services on reserve and will assist in the development of NIFCS within the community and will be expected to work as part of team and the Family Connection Support Worker to promote an integrated approach in developing the physical, emotional, and cultural well-being of children and their families in Lax Kw’alaams.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

  • Be a cultural leader in program development, to ensure that all practices have an opportunity to
    use Tsimshian traditional family values in the day-to-day operation of NIFCS.
  • Promote, and strengthen relationships of parents and children within community and in care as
    needed.
  • Support the reunification of children with their family in the community.
  • Develop and offer programs and services which enhance family life.
  • Coordinate activities and services which promote the role of NIFCS in Lax Kw’alaams
  • Assist in coordinating the activities and development of the Family Connection Support Team.
  • Promote and teach cultural language resources for children/youth and families
  • Work closely with children and youth guided by the NIFCS Family Support team.
  • Facilitate teachings of Tsm’syen history and cultural practice to children/youth on an individual
    basis and in groups.
  • Build deep trusting relationships with Tsm’syen children/youth from NIFCS and in community to
    assist them in healing, drawing on their traditional teachings and understanding and
    appreciating their heritage and sense of cultural identity.
  • Connect children/youth with events and outings that will highlight the history of Tsm’syen
    people.
  • Assist the coordinator to facilitate appropriate cultural practices within the programs.
  • Assist in culturally relevant training, service and programs to staff and families as needed.
  • Assist in conducting ceremonies as sanctioned by an elder and consistent with their teachings.
  • Family Cultural workers will be expected to work in a variety ofsettings, including the local
    school, recreational center, health center, as requested.
  • Participate in agency event planning such as but not limited to: Annual mini-teaching feasts and
    family Christmas gatherings as needed.
  • Plan and participate in programs and activities with parents/caregivers and children, both
    individually and in-groups as needed.
  • Communicate all activities through flyers and bulletins to Lax Kw’alaams families on a regular
    basis.
  • Coordinate and offer activities in the community which reduces risk to families and children.
  • Organize and promote workshops and informational sessions which support effective parenting
    skills.
  • Take part in community activities which support family cohesiveness.
  • Maintain confidentiality and be available to take part in any standby arrangements as required.
  • Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job and
    participate in appropriate training when required.

Basic Qualifications

  • All employees of NIFCS are required to submit a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Screening,
    comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its regulations and all occupational health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Further, to work evening and flexible hours and attend cultural awareness training, among other
    training.
  • Pursuant to Section 41 of the BC Human Rights Code, preference may be given to applicants of
    Aboriginal Ancestry.

Education / Work Experience

  • Post-Secondary Diploma in a related field (Social Service Worker, Child, and Youth Worker, etc.) and at least 1 year of related experience in social work.
  • Must have grade 12 or equivalent
  • Demonstrate the ability to integrate the guiding principle of “Best Interest of the child and family” in
    all duties.
  • Strong knowledge of the Tsimshian culture
  • Ability to share and promote the Tsimshian language
  • Physically able to safely engage programming with families On the Land, IE camping, and harvesting
    foods in their season.
  • Demonstrate excellent planning, organizational, administrative and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate excellent people skills to liaise with a variety of internal and external contacts, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate active listening and healthy boundaries.
  • Experience working with vulnerable children and families.
  • Experience working in the Community Social Services sector
  • Applicants must exercise a high standard of professionalism with sound judgment and be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with access to a reliable car.

Working Conditions

  • Travel in this position is required.
  • The usual hours of work in this position will be from 8:30 to 4:30, Monday to Friday, five (5) days a week, there may be an adjusted schedule for community.
  • As a result of serving the Tsimshian community, the work environment will be in the community.

Compensation & Benefits

  • This is a Bargaining Unit position – Grid 11 $ 27.54 per hour.
  • An eligibility list may be established to fill permanent and/or temporary vacancies.
