Rugged Coast Research Society has recently been approved for funds to conduct beach clean-up work in Chatham sound in collaboration with Lax Kw'alaams and Metlakatla. The work involves accessing the shoreline via boat and or helicopter, collecting debris (nets, floats, plastics etc.) and placing the debris in large bags which will be then collected by helicopter.

Anticipating about 20 days of work commencing late August/Early September until November.
We are hoping to bring on 3-4 people from the Lax Kw'alaams First Nations.

Skills required for the work are as follows:

  • Physically fit and able to walk rugged shorelines in inclement weather
  • Required to spend 2-3 nights camping at more remote locations
  • 7 hours of paid online training prior to starting in Prince Rupert or Lax Kw'alaams
  • Flexible in availability as clean-up work will be marine weather dependent

Preference will be given to applicants with:

  • Boating experience in Chatham Sound
  • Valid First-aid Certification
  • Experience working in the Dundas/Melville area
  • SVOP, Marine First Aid, Radio Operators certificate
    Rate of pay:
    $ 45.00 per hour - Technicians
    $ 50.00 per hour- Crew Leaders
    $ 55.00 per hour - Cultural Environmental Monitors
    Field work also will include per diems.

The Lax Kw'alaams Band has an immediate opening for a Part Time Lifeguard. The successful candidate will provide pool supervision to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment and be capable of providing first aid treatment where necessary. Further, you will be responsible for the overall safety of various swimmers utilizing the pool facilities. You must have the ability to effectively and efficiently protect the safety of swimmers.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

▪ Carry out lifeguarding / instructional duties by monitoring safety practices, Red Cross, Lifesaving Society, National Lifeguard Service and Public Health Act Standards to ensure requirements are maintained.
▪ Lead water exercise classes (aquafit & aqua bike); provide instruction and evaluation for program/class participants.
▪ Perform monitoring and reporting functions by advising the Supervisor of general equipment program needs. Carry out comprehensive water testing and adjustments to water chemistry; monitor operating procedures and ensure standards are maintained; maintain records, logs, books, and submit reports as required.
▪ Assist in maintenance programs including annual maintenance shutdown; maintain facilities by hosing, scrubbing, polishing, cleaning and continued checking of facility and equipment.
▪ Responsible for first aid-related duties; assists with the planning and implementation of special events; the promotion of special events and regular program activities by creating and circulating posters, wall case displays and announcements and program registration and inquiries.
▪ Take reasonable care to protect your own health and safety and the health and safety of other persons affected by their actions by following health and safety requirements affecting their job. Asking for training if unfamiliar with work that you are requested to perform, working safely and encouraging co- workers to do the same and correcting unsafe conditions or reporting them to your supervisor.

Education, Experience, Qualifications:
▪ Lifesaving NLS Pool Option; Aquatic Emergency Care of Standard 1st Aid (current within 2 years)
▪ First Aid and CPR Certificate (current and within 1 year); AED Responder (current within 1 year)
▪ Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
▪ BCRPA Aqua Fit Instruction; Lifesaving Instructor; First Aid Instructor, Pool Operators Level 1 & 2
▪ Grade 12 Education; Post-Secondary Education is an asset.

The Lax Kw'alaams Band openings for an On Call / Part Time Term Guest Services Worker. The successful candidates will be responsible for answering questions about the facility and its programs and services, registering participants for programs and services, handling cash, working in other areas of the facility, Weight Room, Gym, Swimmers Café or assisting in Brighter Futures and maintaining a clean lobby and work area.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
▪ Report any incidents, maintenance problems or safety concerns to the Supervisor.
▪ Provide excellent customer service to guests, staff and volunteers.
▪ Develop and maintain a professional & courteous relationship with guests, staff and volunteers.
▪ Follow all checklists, procedures and schedule of tasks as per the Director of Recreation or Designate.
▪ Ensure that the Lobby, Swimmers Café and Front Desk are clean and presentable at all times.
▪ Assist with the purchase of monthly passes and punch card passes.

The successful candidate will screen Lax Kw’alaams Health Program clients and capture pertinent data, prepare and review a variety of memorandums, correspondence, reports, public notices, permits and documents as assigned. They will complete various forms, and prepare and distribute reports for review and use. The Health Administrative assistand will prepare and maintain a variety of forms used by health programs, and will work closely with the CHR and the MHT. This position reports to the Health Director.

Summer Student Supervisor Term

The Lax Kw'alaams Band has openings for an On-Call Brighter Futures Youth Worker. The successful candidate will deliver services in a Culturally Safe setting and respectful manner that complies with current Brighter Futures policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Be active and engage in all Program activities during shift including community events or collaborated programs with other Community departments.
  • To spend at least 75% of your time to build purposeful relationships with the Youth who access Brighter Futures Programming
  • Be a positive role model for all youth in the community.
  • To empower Youth through a process of reflective practice to find their own direction in life.
  • To encourage Youth to make a difference in Lax Kw’alaams
  • Act as an informal point of contact for Youth, to be a friendly welcoming face within the community and someone the Youth can trust to talk to.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with the Youth, acting as their advocate if needed whilst ensuring appropriate confidentiality and the maintenance of professional boundaries at all times.
  • Assist the Lead Youth Worker in running and engaging activities either as a part of a group or one to one.
  • Facilitate programs and workshops with youth ages 7 – 29.
  • Work as part of a team and as an individual to provide a safe environment. Report any Health and Safety or safeguarding concerns to the Brighter Futures Coordinator
  • Able to facilitate conflict resolutions between youth when needed.
  • Must be responsible and ethical, shows compassion and empathy.
  • Facilitate or willing to learn to facilitate Cultural Harvesting, Traditional Arts & Mental Health programs.
  • Maintain accurate logs and compile statistical records to support program needs and inform ongoing program development and evaluation
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills with Youth, professionals and agencies showing consideration and respect for their views, ensuring that all communication, including on issues that may be emotionally distressing, is dealt with in an appropriate manner and conveyed in ways acceptable to the recipient.
  • Attend team meetings.
  • Work evenings & weekends.
  • Clean up materials and space used at the end of each program.
  • Travel up to 2 weeks with youth – ie. Canoe Journey, Seaweed camp, Conferences etc
  • Lift up to 50lb
  • Perform all other tasks within the scope of the position and as assigned.

Education, Experience and Knowledge:

  • Must have completed minimum grade 12.
  • First Aid and CPR preferred or willing to take.
  • Knowledge base in, Food safe & Food skills for families and Community Health Education and Prevention.
  • Good standing in the community with knowledge of community members
  • Excellent Computer Office Skills.
  • A valid driver's license.

The Lax Kw'alaams Band and the Brighter Futures have an immediate opening for a casual and on-call Janitor. You are expected to be self-motivated, self-directed and take the initiative in the tasks that need to be completed in a timely manner. The position will be required to be available for work on weekends and weekday/ evening shifts.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Empty wastebaskets, dust shelves, window sills, office desks and all other surfaces; wash and wipe down marks on walls.
  • Sweeping, mopping and vacuuming floors
  • Monitor and ensure that the building premises are locked, secure and safe during unoccupied hours.
  • Dust and polish tables, wash, dry and stack coffee cups left in the kitchen. Sanitize surfaces in the kitchen areas.
  • Wipe the exterior of the fridges; make sure coffee pot(s) are off and cleaned; wipe down counters.
  • Clean and disinfect washroom and fixtures, including stocking adequate soap, towels and other supplies
  • Keep the exterior of the building free of garbage, keep stairs and decks free of debris.
  • Keep all entrances free of snow and other debris and immediately report hazards to the supervisor
  • Act promptly to treat slippery conditions with compounds to eliminate or minimize hazardous conditions when they exist
  • Seasonal cleaning (fall and spring) includes stripping and waxing the floors, cleaning the fridges and stoves, emptying and wiping down cupboards and other tasks identified by the Supervisor or a designate. Clean the windows inside and outside
  • Ensure that custodial supplies' inventory is adequate and up to date; provide ordering requirements to the Supervisor
  • Perform other tasks within the scope of the position.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a similar role; previous experience with small equipment repair is an asset.
  • Knowledge of the safe application of chemicals and products used in cleaning and sanitizing; WHMIS Certificate.
  • Highly motivated and able to work independently; must be able to schedule and prioritize work.
  • Ability to multi-task and establish priorities.
  • Able to deal with people sensitivity, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times.
  • First Aid skills and/or certificates are considered assets.

Working Conditions

  • Ongoing exposure to dust, chemicals, unsanitary conditions; ongoing physical activity like mopping, sweeping, scrubbing, lifting, bending and stretching; physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs.; ability to stand for long periods.
  • Ability to bend and crouch; work both indoors and outdoors
  • Hazards associated with the trade, including exposure to common chemical cleaners.
  • Ability to demonstrate a commitment to embodying a healthy lifestyle.
