The Lax Kw'alaams Band and Brighter Futures Program have one full time and one on call position available for employment as Brighter Futures Youth Workers. The successful candidates will deliver services in a Culturally Safe setting in a respectful manner that complies with current Brighter Futures policies and procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
- Be active and engage in all program activities during shift including community events or collaborated programs with other departments.
- Build positive relationships with the Youth who access Brighter Futures programming and youth in the community.
- To empower Youth through a process of reflective practice to find their own direction in life
- To encourage Youth to contribute and be involved in the community in Lax Kw’alaams
- Act as an informal point of contact for Youth, to be a friendly welcoming face within the community and someone the Youth can trust to talk to.
- Maintain a professional relationship with the Youth, acting as their advocate, ensuring appropriate confidentiality and the maintenance of professional boundaries at all times.
- Assist other Youth Workers in running and engaging activities either as a part of a group or one to one.
- Facilitate programs and workshops with youth ages 7 – 29.
- Work as part of a team and as an individual to provide a safe environment. Report any Health and Safety or safeguarding concerns to the Brighter Futures Coordinator
- Able to facilitate conflict resolutions between youth when needed.
- Must be responsible and ethical, shows compassion and empathy.
- Facilitate or willing to learn to facilitate Cultural Harvesting, Traditional Arts & Mental Health programs.
- Maintain accurate logs and compile statistical records to support program needs and information of ongoing program development and evaluation
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills with Youth, professionals and agencies showing consideration and respect for their views, ensuring that all communication, including on issues that may be emotionally distressing, is dealt with in an appropriate manner and conveyed in ways acceptable to the recipient.

- Travel up to 2 weeks with youth – ie. Canoe Journey, Seaweed camp, Conferences etc.

Qualifications:
- A combination of education and experience will be considered, preference for a minimum of grade 12 graduation
- First Aid and CPR preferred or willing to take.
- Knowledge base in Food safe & Food skills for families and Community Health Education and Prevention.
- Good standing in the community with knowledge of community members
- Excellent Computer Office Skills, preferred, willing to train
- A valid BC Driver's license class 5 - Required

The Lax Kw'alaams Band has an immediate opening for Temporary Term Indian Residential School (ISR) Researcher. This position, reporting to the Project Manager is responsible for collecting records, impact statements, shared truths that pertain to the Girls Crosby School and Miller Bay hospital. The searcher will provide support to the technical team in data retrieval and data entry. The IRS Researcher supports the development and implementation of community-led strategies to identify, investigate, protect and commemorate residential school and hospital sites. This position is a temporary term position based upon available project funding.
As the IRS Researcher, this position is instrumental in managing the activities of the research team, including data entry, research, survivor support, engagement, conduct interviews, land scanning support, and managing follow up with survivors and project team.
Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

• Ensures IRS research is done in an ethical manner, following the Tri-Council Policy statement: Ethical Conduct for Research involving Humans- TCPS2
• Create a work plan for IRS research and guide the research team through its implementation.
• Directly contribute to and manage creation of research reports and presentation, including a short documentary video recording
• Manage the process and ensure research findings/reports/presentations are announced and distributed.
• Coordinate with different companies to provide technical expertise from ground penetrating radar consultants, other scanning tools, archaeologists, communications, legal, excavation and other professional services as required.
• Directly contribute to and manage creation of research data entry system for Lax Kw’alaams band.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
• You serve as an Officer in the conduct of deck department activities
• Loading / unloading vehicles and passengers
• Navigation, ship husbandry

The Lax Kw'alaams Band and the Fire Department have immediate openings, for On Call First Responders. The successful candidates will have to attend mandatory training, follow instructions and be able to work in challenging conditions. The position will cover the Fire Department and Ambulance services to the Community.
Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
▪ Attend all mandatory training to become a certified First Responder
▪ Ability to work all shifts, including weekends, late evenings, early morning, as required.

The successful candidate is expected to be self-motivated, self-directed and take the initiative in the tasks that need to be completed in a timely manner. The position will be required to be available for work on weekends and weekday/evening shifts.
Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
- Empty wastebaskets, dust shelves, window sills, office desks and all other surfaces; wash and wipe down marks on walls.
- Sweeping, mopping and vacuuming floors
- Monitor and ensure that the building premises are locked, secure and safe during unoccupied hours.
- Dust and polish tables, wash, dry and stack coffee cups left in the kitchen. Sanitize surfaces in the kitchen areas.
- Wipe the exterior of the fridges; make sure coffee pot(s) are off and cleaned; wipe down counters.
- Clean and disinfect washroom and fixtures, including stocking adequate soap, towels and other supplies
- Keep the exterior of the building free of garbage, keep stairs and decks free of debris.
- Keep all entrances free of snow and other debris and immediately report hazards to the supervisor
- Act promptly to treat slippery conditions with compounds to eliminate or minimize hazardous conditions when they exist
- Seasonal cleaning (fall and spring) includes stripping and waxing the floors, cleaning the fridges and stoves, emptying and wiping down cupboards and other tasks identified by the Supervisor or a
designate. Clean the windows inside and outside - Ensure that custodial supplies' inventory is adequate and up to date; provide ordering requirements to the Supervisor

- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a similar role; previous experience with small equipment repair is an asset.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
- Be active and engage in all Program activities during shift including community events or collaborated programs with other Community departments.
- To spend at least 75% of your time to build purposeful relationships with the Youth who access Brighter Futures Programming
- Be a positive role model for all youth in the community.
- To empower Youth through a process of reflective practice to find their own direction in life.
- To encourage Youth to make a difference in Lax Kw’alaams
- Act as an informal point of contact for Youth, to be a friendly welcoming face within the community and someone the Youth can trust to talk to.
- Maintain a professional relationship with the Youth, acting as their advocate if needed whilst ensuring appropriate confidentiality and the maintenance of professional boundaries at all times.
- Assist the Lead Youth Worker in running and engaging activities either as a part of a group or one to one.
- Facilitate programs and workshops with youth ages 7 – 29.
- Work as part of a team and as an individual to provide a safe environment. Report any Health and Safety or safeguarding concerns to the Brighter Futures Coordinator
- Able to facilitate conflict resolutions between youth when needed.
- Must be responsible and ethical, shows compassion and empathy.
- Facilitate or willing to learn to facilitate Cultural Harvesting, Traditional Arts & Mental Health programs.
- Maintain accurate logs and compile statistical records to support program needs and inform ongoing program development and evaluation
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills with Youth, professionals and agencies showing consideration and respect for their views, ensuring that all communication, including on issues that may be emotionally distressing, is dealt with in an appropriate manner and conveyed in ways acceptable to the recipient.
