Brighter Futures Youth Worker – On Call

The Lax Kw'alaams Band has openings for an On-Call Brighter Futures Youth Worker. The successful candidate will deliver services in a Culturally Safe setting and respectful manner that complies with current Brighter Futures policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Be active and engage in all Program activities during shift including community events or collaborated programs with other Community departments.
  • To spend at least 75% of your time to build purposeful relationships with the Youth who access Brighter Futures Programming
  • Be a positive role model for all youth in the community.
  • To empower Youth through a process of reflective practice to find their own direction in life.
  • To encourage Youth to make a difference in Lax Kw’alaams
  • Act as an informal point of contact for Youth, to be a friendly welcoming face within the community and someone the Youth can trust to talk to.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with the Youth, acting as their advocate if needed whilst ensuring appropriate confidentiality and the maintenance of professional boundaries at all times.
  • Assist the Lead Youth Worker in running and engaging activities either as a part of a group or one to one.
  • Facilitate programs and workshops with youth ages 7 – 29.
  • Work as part of a team and as an individual to provide a safe environment. Report any Health and Safety or safeguarding concerns to the Brighter Futures Coordinator
  • Able to facilitate conflict resolutions between youth when needed.
  • Must be responsible and ethical, shows compassion and empathy.
  • Facilitate or willing to learn to facilitate Cultural Harvesting, Traditional Arts & Mental Health programs.
  • Maintain accurate logs and compile statistical records to support program needs and inform ongoing program development and evaluation
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills with Youth, professionals and agencies showing consideration and respect for their views, ensuring that all communication, including on issues that may be emotionally distressing, is dealt with in an appropriate manner and conveyed in ways acceptable to the recipient.
  • Attend team meetings.

  • Clean up materials and space used at the end of each program.
  • Travel up to 2 weeks with youth – ie. Canoe Journey, Seaweed camp, Conferences etc

On-Call Casual Custodian Recreation Centre

The Lax Kw'alaams Band and the Recreation Centre have an immediate opening for a casual and on-call Custodian. The successful candidate is expected to be self-motivated, self-directed and take the initiative in the tasks that need to be completed in a timely manner. The position will be required to be available for regularly scheduled work on weekends and casual on call weekday/ evening shifts.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Empty wastebaskets, dust shelves, window sills, office desks and all other surfaces; wash and wipe down marks on walls.
  • Sweeping, mopping and vacuuming floors
  • Monitor and ensure that the building premises are locked, secure and safe during unoccupied hours.
  • Dust and polish tables, wash, dry and stack coffee cups left in the kitchen. Sanitize surfaces in the kitchen areas.
  • Wipe the exterior of the fridges; make sure coffee pot(s) are off and cleaned; wipe down counters.
  • Clean and disinfect washroom and fixtures, including stocking adequate soap, towels and other
    supplies
  • Keep the exterior of the building free of garbage, keep stairs and decks free of debris.
  • Keep all entrances free of snow and other debris and immediately report hazards to the supervisor
  • Act promptly to treat slippery conditions with compounds to eliminate or minimize hazardous conditions when they exist
  • Seasonal cleaning (fall and spring) includes stripping and waxing the floors, cleaning the fridges and stoves, emptying and wiping down cupboards and other tasks identified by the Supervisor or a designate. Clean the windows inside and outside
  • Ensure that custodial supplies' inventory is adequate and up to date; provide ordering requirements to the Supervisor

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.

Greenhouse Coordinator

The Lax Kw'alaams Band and the Wap Suwilaawksa School have an immediate opening for a Greenhouse Coordinator. The primary focus of this position is to work closely with staff and students to deliver educational workshops demonstrating how we can become more food secure. In addition, our goal is to integrate parents and community members into greenhouse activities. This role requires an individual who is passionate about community-building, organic food practices and local sustainability.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
Working with the school and community:
▪ Work closely with teachers and students on a daily basis to educate about the entire growing, harvesting and maintenance process of the greenhouse.
▪ Organize greenhouse-related educational workshops for community members in the growing dome.
▪ Host regular gatherings with parents and other community members (cooking days, drying tea, etc).
▪ Work to foster the relationship between the school and the community through greenhouse activities.
▪ Work independently with a class of students to deliver greenhouse curriculum.
▪ Work with staff to bring long-term plans for the greenhouse to fruition.
▪ Maintain regular posts and communication through the Growing Dome Facebook page.
▪ Work with the school Kitchen Programs to plan grow cycles based on their needs.

Greenhouse Knowledge (training is available for this part):
▪ Experience in organic gardening is considered an asset.
▪ Familiarity with the growing dome’s layout, design and technology including ventilation system, location and utilization of agricultural tools and functionality of equipment (thermal pool, heater, lighting, etc.).
▪ Inspect dome technology and gardening equipment to check for disrepair and maintain properly,
facilitate orders to replace equipment as needed.
▪ Perform daily systems checks, nutrients levels, greenhouse temperature, new growth and troubleshooting.
▪ Maintain accurate records of crops, harvests, and produce donated or sold.
▪ Maintain accurate records of seed inventory, equipment, packaging, vendors, other activities or items related to operations.
▪ Manage irrigation, fertigation, lighting and heat requirements for operations.
▪ Germinate seeds using greenhouse equipment.
▪ Maintain crop cycles through transplanting, identifying disease and malnutrition.
▪ Determine demand of market, plan grow cycles and cultivation activities based on school and community needs.
▪ Maintain proper health and safety protocol (i.e., safe food handling and storage) of produce, maintain a clean workspace and know sanitization protocols.

Experience and Knowledge:
▪ Knowledge and sensitivity to cultural practices and traditions in the workplace and community (i.e., medicinal plants, protocols, smudging, ceremonial fires).
▪ Knowledgeable on current program offerings, career paths, food security programs and educational materials to educate and promote community members, local schools, and surrounding communities
The incumbent must be willing to receive training, or be proficient in the following areas:
▪ Foodsafe certification preferred.
▪ Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
▪ Trained in Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).
▪ Ability to read and understand labels and instructions, particularly on the use and application of chemicals, products, equipment and machinery.
▪ Keep up to date on new information and research in the greenhouse/growing dome industry. Participate in training with Green Iglu Technicians online and in person during onsite training skills.

The successful candidate will provide administrative and accounting support by carrying out the tasks within Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Reception or Financial clerk roles.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

Receives, sorts, prepares and processes accounts payable/ receivable data, including obtaining voucher approval for entry in the Band’s computerized accounting system.

  • Receiving the general public at the reception area
  • Responding to requests from the public
  • Answering and directing telephone calls
  • Selling goods and services of the Band
  • Cheque cashing and handling other cash transactions
  • Sorting and distributing mail
  • Enter data into a computer on a timely basis to produce cheques and reports and distribute on approval
  • Liaise with suppliers to answer queries and to correct or change invoices for tax exemptions
  • Reconcile Accounts Payable/ Receivables, records and supplier statements as directed
  • Prepare and process travel arrangements and expenses.
  • Assist other staff and external auditors with regular accounting duties including month and year end processes as directed.

The Lax Kw'alaams Band has an immediate opening for a Casual and On-Call Assistant CHR to work with clients in their homes, supporting the Health team.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Good connection within the community
  • Assist CHR Program planning
  • Assist with ordering and planning of events and programs
  • Promoting Health Center information in newsletter format
  • Assist advocating for community members
  • Assist in provide pre-natal workshops and pre-natal care to support new mothers in the community.
  • Make home visits to the sick, aged, new mothers and others with health care needs.
  • Assist increating/ updating a client list for all ages, assists in school with immunization and health education. • Distribute health related information and educate with guidance from CHR/CHN
  • Assists and helps manage programs with team
  • Collaborates with other health professionals
  • Assist with water safety checks
  • Advocates on behalf of clients and makes links to various services
  • Provides health information and provides information of health services
  • Sets-up and assists with workshops, clinics, and activities for community development, prevention, awareness initiatives and health education
  • Provides transportation to clients who require it • Addresses safety concerns, ensure environmental health safety
  • Assists with Community Garden
  • Assists with Community Kitchen
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualification:

  • Combination of Education and Certification in Health/ Community considered an asset
  • Computer Office skills preferred
  • Knowledge base in Food skills and Community Health Education
  • First Aid and CPR preferred
  • Good standing in community with knowledge of community members
  • Valid Driver’s License Required
  • Criminal Check Required

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Wages will be $ 24.24 hourly, less biweekly deductions

Housing Carpenter


Fulltime – 2 positions

The Lax Kw'alaams Band and the Housing Department have immediate openings for 2 full-time Carpenters.
The successful candidate will be carrying out all the tasks within the Housing department.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
Under the direct supervision of the Housing Director or designate. Carpenters shall be responsible for but not limited to the following duties:

  • Variety of jobs, including the installation of doors and windows, building different pieces of furniture, rebuilding roofs, and design and build kitchens.
  • Responsible for identifying materials that need to be used, finding the right suppliers for that material, and working with a team of specialists who have the necessary skills and expertise to build and complete those projects.
  • Perform woodworking tasks
  • Prepare daily reports and follow maintenance schedules
  • Operate vehicles
  • Attendance at workshops & training as requested
  • Perform manual labor including climbing into confined areas in adverse conditions to carry out repair and installation procedures
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Preference for candidates in possession of a Class 5 (minimum) or Class 3, 1, driver’s license and be able to show a responsible driving record; Required
  • Deal with the public in a courteous and considerate manner
  • Work conditions may be hazardous. Must be in good health & physical condition
  • Candidate must show a responsible attitude and desire to perform the duties required.
  • Experience working in an outdoor environment
  • Familiar with BC Building Codes
  • Must be able to work at heights safely
  • Advanced knowledge of using tools, machinery

The Lax Kw'alaams Band has an opening for an On Call Guest Services Worker. The successful candidate will be responsible for answering questions about the facility and its programs and services, registering participants for programs and services, handling cash, working in other areas of the facility, Weight Room, Gym, Swimmers Cafe or assisting in Brighter Futures and maintaining a clean lobby and work area.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
▪ Report any incidents, maintenance problems or safety concerns to the Supervisor.
▪ Provide excellent customer service to guests, staff and volunteers.
▪ Develop and maintain a professional & courteous relationship with guests, staff and volunteers.
▪ Follow all checklists, procedures and schedule of tasks as per the Director of Recreation or Designate.
▪ Ensure that the Lobby, Swimmers Café and Front Desk are clean and presentable at all times.
▪ Assist with the purchase of monthly passes and punch card passes.
▪ As requested, ensure that all cash handling procedures are completed and documented correctly, such as youth conferences, school events, recruitment fairs, and community development workshops.
▪ Complete and balance end-of-shift cash sheets and receipts.
▪ Sell retail items (e.g., diapers, swimming goggles, etc.). Promote the sale of monthly passes and punch
passes.
▪ Perform other tasks within the scope of the position.

Education, Experience and Knowledge:
▪ Cash Handling Experience – able to make cash changes and complete accurate cash reports- willing to
train
▪ 1-year previous experience working in a Customer Service Environment- preferred
▪ Provide excellent customer service to guests, staff and volunteers.
▪ General knowledge of office skills, including computer skills, such as typing, word processing, and effectively using Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, Email). Ability to keep accurate daily logs.
▪ Ability to resolve conflict effectively with both staff and guests.
▪ Ability to complete maintenance and cleaning duties for the Front Desk work area, the Lobby, or wherever needed.

▪ Be on time for all assigned shifts or shifts that you agreed to cover for another staff. Available for last- minute calls.

▪ Ability to demonstrate a commitment to embodying a healthy lifestyle.

Compensation & Benefits
▪ Wages will be $19.72 per hour or the most current wages per the Collective Agreement.
