The Lax Kw'alaams Business Development has an immediate opening for a permanent full-time position as Assistant to the Chief Operating Officer. This position will be responsible for the management, organization, coordination, and planning as it relates to specific functions and activities of the Office of the Chief Operating Officer including preparation of reports for internal and external use.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Oversee and manage the Lax Kw'alaams Business Development websites & social media communications.
  • Provide a broad range of communication support and assist in the administration, preparation and distribution of various documents and correspondence.
  • Work closely with and support the COO on special initiatives.
  • Be the primary point of contact in the absence of the COO and liaise with other departments within the organization.
  • Assist with preparation and recording of board meetings.
  • Coordinate meetings, maintains confidential files and contact information.
  • Supports the COO with external commitments related to Lax Kw'alaams Business Development including services on external boards, committees, or other groups.
  • draft funding proposals to various agencies, monitor expenditures for approved projects and prepare reports upon completion.
  • Perform all other tasks within the scope of the position.

Education, Experience and Knowledge:

  • Experience with Adobe In-Design, Adobe Acrobat Pro and Microsoft Office Suite, web platforms and databases.
  • Bachelor's degree in commerce, Management, Marketing, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in supporting successful communications, media relations, events, and corporate reputation initiatives.
  • Solid time management and prioritization skills, with the ability to juggle multiple and sometimes competing priorities simultaneously. Highly organized and detail orientated.
  • 5+ years of increasingly responsible experience in a First Nation organization, non-profit organization, or the public sector.
  • Valid BC driver's license.

The Lax KW'alaams Band has an immediate opening for a permanent and full-time Human Resources Manager. The successful candidate will perform a range of Human Resources related duties that include ensuring the overall administration, coordination and evaluation of the Lax Kw'alaams Band Human Resources plans and programs.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with managers and staff related to human resources programs.
  • Maintain and update employee files, ensuring all files are kept confidential in keeping with privacy and legislation.
  • Complete all hire, change and separation paperwork.
  • Work with managers to ensure job descriptions are updated.
  • Interpret policies and provide related assistance and advice to managers and staff.
  • Provide coaching, advice and assistance on HR matters to employees and managers as required.
  • Recommend policy and process changes to improve staff morale, satisfaction and engagement.
  • Oversee employee relations issues (e.g., employee complaints) in accordance with all legal requirements.
  • Proactive management of WorkSafeBC injury and other disability claims focusing on prevention and return to work, and liaising with WorkSafeBC and insurance providers on claims.
  • Investigate accidents thoroughly and effectively in collaboration with the department managers, ensure accident claims are appropriately processed and prepare related reports and recommendations.
  • Oversee recruitment, employee training and development within the Band.

Education, Experience and Knowledge:

  • Personable, able to comfortably and pleasantly deal with a variety of people.
  • Ability to correctly make decisions involving staff issues/problems according to legislation, HR Manual and applicable Collective Agreements. Strong customer service skills.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to effectively learn and acquire new knowledge and skills. Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and emails.
  • Two (2) years of education and experience are an asset, but willing to train someone passionate about HR.
  • A diploma or certificate in human resources or related field is an asset or willingness to obtain.
  • Experience, preferably in an Indigenous organization, or an acceptable combination of equivalent education, training, or experience in related fields.

The Lax Kw'alaams Band has an immediate opening for a Casual and On-Call health Care Aide. The successful candidate will deliver services in an appropriate, caring and respectful manner and is compliant with current legislation and policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Takes direction from Home Care Nurse as it pertains to the position tasks.
  • Able to assist with palliation of clients that wish to palliate at home.
  • Provide care and companionship for individuals and families.
  • Escort clients to medical appointments as needed.
  • Assist in making meals for clients in their home if needed and assist Meals on Wheels as needed.
  • Perform health-related duties through all ages, such as changing dressings and assisting with the care of individuals with direction from Home Care Nurse or Clinic RN's.
  • Provide information to other health care professionals as required and complete appropriate documentation on client charts in a timely manner.
  • Follow Health and Safety principles in delivering care to clients in the community.

Business Unit: Coast Tsimshian Academy

Reporting to: School Principal

The Lax Kw'alaams Band and the Coast Tsimshian Academy have an opening for a full-time Special Education Teacher. You will work in a collaborative team environment with classroom teachers, counsellors and other support workers. The Special Education Teacher will be responsible for establishing, implementing and reviewing the IEPs and Smart Goals.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Work with other staff members, develop individualized educational programs (IEPs) specific to each student's needs. These IEPs outline goals and services for each student.
  • Implement IEPs, assess student's performance, and track their progress routinely throughout the year.
  • Observe and document learner strengths, achievements, and needs through daily learning activities. Carry out functional (informal) assessment activities to assist the teacher in developing learner profiles.
  • Facilitating IEP meetings and creating Behaviour Plans.
  • Working with guardians/teachers to create SMART goals; scheduling One-on-One pull-out session.
  • Create daily lesson plans based on BC Ministry of Education standards.
  • Evaluate student performance on tasks established by the standards using different methods such as observation, performance-based tasks or other standard test practices.
  • Maintain a safe, orderly and supportive classroom by modelling expected behaviour and standards, promoting positive interactions and quickly addressing behaviours that are not in line with the school policy.
  • Communicate with parents regularly about schedules, assignments, events, and individual student needs. Meet with parents during scheduled conferences during the school year.

Education, Experience and Knowledge:

  • BC Teacher Certification specializing in Special Education.

  • Teaching experience - minimum of 3 years, preferably in a First Nations School.
  • In-depth knowledge of the new BC Ed curriculum, and other educational programs.

The Lax Kw'alaams Band has an immediate opening for a temporary full-time Substance Use/Mental Wellness Worker. Under the Health Director's direct supervision, the successful candidate will be responsible for the planning, facilitating, and implementing a program to promote a healthy drug and alcohol addiction-free lifestyle for Lax Kw'alaams community members.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Promote community health development through the provision of education and awareness of the effects of drugs alcohol; provide educational workshops for the effects of drugs/prescription drugs/alcohol.
  • Initiate referrals to appropriate treatment Centre's needed.
  • Recommend and provide alternatives to the use of alcohol and drugs (social, cultural, recreational activities that will involve the client and/or their families).
  • Develop and maintain a library of resource material for use by the recovering client.
  • Assist individuals in their quest for sobriety (researching suitable rehabilitation, assisting with admittance, follow-up care, etc.); establish support groups within the Band as required.
  • Develop an aftercare program for those clients returning from treatment to avoid relapse.
  • Schedule weekly appointments with clients to assist with recovery as needed.
  • Reporting as required by the funding agency, Mayor and Council, etc..
  • Perform other tasks within the scope of the position.

Education, Experience and Knowledge:

  • Post-Secondary Diploma in a related field (Social Service Worker, Child and Youth Worker, addictions counselling, etc.); a Master's Degree is desirable. Willing to train and mentor the "right" candidate.
  • Strong working knowledge of First Nations culture.
  • Ability to demonstrate a commitment to embodying a personal addiction-free lifestyle during work.
  • Previous experience in a health-related field will be considered an asset.
  • Valid driver's license with reliable transportation.
