Health Director Associate

The Lax Kw'alaams Band has an immediate opening for a permanent full-time Health Director associate/mentee position. This is a unique opportunity for advancement and education, and to develop the skills necessary to become a successful Health Director.
The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the Health Director in the planning, organization, development, promotion and evaluation of the Health and Social Development programs. This position will also perform supervisory, administrative and professional duties in the absence of the Health Director. An individual course of training, including both formal and informal education and on-the-job training will be established to meet the needs of the successful candidate.
Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
▪ Assist the Health Director in developing, collaborating and implementing strategies to improve the Health Care services and programs
▪ With the Health Director, establish learning goals, objectives and activities for the Health Centre.
▪ Attention to detail and ability to multitask
▪ Ability to work independently and as part of a team
▪ Assist in working with the community, other Health Centre staff and departments to determine the changing health needs of the community.
▪ Assist the Health Director in planning, implementing and evaluating Health Centre programs and services.
▪ Support the Health Director in selecting, employing and managing Health Centre employees.
▪ Work and cooperate with the Health and all staff concerned with providing professional services to clients to enable the Health Centre to provide the best possible care and service.
▪ Assist with facilitating a variety of meetings, workshops and seminars, and interdisciplinary teams for
the purpose of gathering, conveying and/or sharing information on clients’ health needs, service delivery, and educational programs.
▪ Performs backup functions in the absence of the Health Director for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
▪ Perform all other tasks within the scope of the position and as assigned.
Education, Experience and Knowledge:
▪ Ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s Degree or certificate in any of the Health Sciences. Or, a willingness to undertake further post-secondary education. Preference will be given to community members.
▪ Understanding of the Health Sector; administrative experience and knowledge of finances and budgets.
▪ Union and human resources management experience; community driven and able to maintain and foster a collaborative approach with other professionals.
▪ Knowledge of traditional and cultural health approaches; assist with leadership and strategic plans.
▪ Must have a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License. First Aid and CPR preferred or willing to take.
▪ Good organizational skills, verbal and written communication skills, conflict resolution, time management, interpersonal skills; confidentiality, professional conduct, sound judgement, respectful, diplomacy, empathy, sympathy and integrity.

GIS and Referrals Analyst / Coordinator

The Lax Kw'alaams Band has an immediate opening for a GIS and Referrals Analyst. The successful candidates will be carrying out all the tasks within the Lands and Resources program.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• The Position will, as required, collaborate with all Lax Kw’alaams departments, businesses, agencies, legal counsel, neighboring First Nations communities, federal and provincial government officials, and project proponents as necessary, with a view to protecting, sustaining or rebuilding Lax Kw’alaams’ longstanding relationship with and beneficial interests in it’s lands and natural resources.
• The Position provides technical services to the Director and Referrals Team related to lands and natural resource development and management, providing technical services pertaining to land management and stewardship. As a member of the Lands, Resources and Stewardship Department, the position provides technical services, identifies issues, reviews project proposals, and assists in the development of referrals responses to facilitate timely and incisive responses on all matters relating to environmental assessments and project referrals.
Position Requirements:
• Preference for candidates in possession of a Class 5 (minimum) or Class 3, 1, drivers license and be able to show a responsible driving record;
• Deal with the public in a courteous and considerate manner;

• Provides technical services to the Director on EAs and referral reviews for projects in Lax Kw’alaams territories;
• Assist the Lands, Resources, and Stewardship Department with general GIS services;
• Use shapefiles and other references and baseline information to analyze spatial data and create maps and GIS tools for the Lands, Resources, and Stewardship Department;
• Conduct basic research assessments on location values to prepare value layers for the Lands, Resources and Stewardship Department;
• Managing multiples referral files while staying on schedule and providing quality written materials and work product.
• Represent the Referrals Team and Lax Kw’alaams in regulatory and community meetings, workshops and
events, and prepare and present materials where required.
• Participates in provincial and federal environmental review processes relating to proposed projects in Lax Kw’alaams’ territory, including representing Lax Kw’alaams on technical committees as necessary;
• Attends meetings, and writes reports and presentations for a variety of audiences;
• Reviews project and permit applications with technical rigour;
• Participates in working group meetings, conducts field visits, and interacts with technical representatives of project proponents and regulators;
• Contributes to the ongoing development and implementation of Lax Kw’alaams Land Use Plan;
• Assists in the formulation of monitoring and compliance activities associated with environmental reviews and other initiatives;
• Analyses technical reports to identify potential issues and makes recommendations to the as needed;
• Drafts reports, letters, and other written responses as directed;
• Drafts briefing notes and makes recommendations to Director on issues relating to environmental assessments, proposed projects and environmental monitoring activities;
• Maintains records/documents with a view to preserving knowledge;
• Maintains confidentiality as per policy guidelines; and,
• Perform other tasks associated within the scope of the position as assigned.
Qualifications:
• Certificate or bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience, in resource management, GIS, physical or biological science, ecology or any other environmental science relevant to the position;
• A minimum three years’ professional experience;
• General understanding of environmental assessment processes;
• Some experience conducting technical review of scientific studies;
• Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with government, industry, and First Nation community
members;
• Ability to search applicable regulations relevant to a referral file;
• Basic appreciation of Coast Tsimshian culture and practices;
• Ability to work successfully with First Nation communities;
• Strong organization skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and tight timelines;
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as part of a dynamic team;
• Proficient use of various office-based software including Microsoft Office Suite; and,
• Demonstrated problem solving skills and ability to use good judgement in making decisions.
Working Environment
• Work is performed in the Lax Kw’alaams Office in Prince Rupert and in the Lax Kw’alaams Band Office. A
willingness to work flexible hours on occasion, when required to attend internal, external, Council or committee meetings.

The successful candidate will provide payroll, administrative and accounting support by carrying out all the tasks within the payroll cycle so that employees are paid, employee files are current and maintained, payroll liabilities are recorded accurately, and mandatory employee/employer-related costs are remitted.
Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
▪ Process bi-weekly payroll ensuring timekeeping information for all employees such as overtime, vacation and sick leave are correctly entered and approved and appropriate deductions for El, CPP, shared
contributions to group insurance, pension and other deductions are computed.
▪ Reconcile bi-weekly payroll for accuracy and completeness.
▪ Manage compensation packages using payroll software.
▪ Work with HR to maintain an accurate database of relevant employee information to process payroll

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

Education, Experience and Knowledge:
▪ Grade 12 Education.

The Lax Kw'alaams Band has an immediate opening for a casual and on-call Guest Services Worker. The successful candidate will be responsible for answering questions about the facility and its programs and services, registering participants for programs and services, handling cash, working in other areas of the facility (e.g., Weight Room, Gym, Swimmers Cafe or assisting in Brighter Futures) and maintaining a clean lobby and work area. During certain times of the day, you may be designated as the immediate
backup for the Lifeguard on duty, which means that additional First Aid and Lifesaving training is required. You will be detailed orientated and take pride in your work.
Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
▪ Report any incidents, maintenance problems or safety concerns to the Supervisor.
▪ Provide excellent customer service to guests, staff and volunteers.
▪ Develop and maintain a professional & courteous relationship with guests, staff and volunteers.
▪ Follow all checklists, procedures and schedule of tasks as per the Director of Recreation or Designate.
▪ Ensure that the Lobby, Swimmers Café and Front Desk are clean and presentable at all times.
▪ Assist with the purchase of monthly passes and punch card passes.
▪ As requested, ensure that all cash handling procedures are completed and documented correctly, such as youth
conferences, school events, recruitment fairs, and community development workshops.
▪ Complete and balance end-of-shift cash sheets and receipts.
▪ Sell retail items (e.g., diapers, swimming goggles, etc.). Promote the sale of monthly passes and punch passes.
▪ Perform other tasks within the scope of the position.
Education, Experience and Knowledge:
▪ Grade 12 Education.
▪ Cash Handling Experience – able to make cash changes and complete accurate cash reports.
▪ 1-year previous experience working in a Customer Service Environment.
▪ Provide excellent customer service to guests, staff and volunteers.
▪ General knowledge of office skills, including computer skills, such as typing, word processing, and effectively using Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, Email). Ability to keep accurate daily logs.
▪ Ability to resolve conflict effectively with both staff and guests.
▪ Ability to complete maintenance and cleaning duties for the Front Desk work area, the Lobby, or wherever needed.
▪ Be on time for all assigned shifts or shifts that you agreed to cover for another staff. Available for last-minute calls.
▪ Ability to demonstrate a commitment to embodying a personal addiction-free lifestyle.
▪ A valid driver license.
▪ The successful candidate will be asked to provide a current Criminal Record Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Screening as a condition of employment. Also, you must be fully COVID vaccinated (at least 2 vaccines).
Compensation & Benefits
▪ Wages will be $18.45 per hour or the most current wages per the Collective Agreement.

The Lax Kw'alaams Wap Suwilaawksa has an immediate opening for a temporary full-time Cook. The successful person will support the school in delivering high-quality food for breakfast and lunch. A typical workday is seven hours (7:00 am – 2:00 pm).
Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
▪ Take responsibility for preparing, presenting and serving all meals to an exceptional standard.
▪ Prepare, cook and appropriately present meals for students and special functions as required.
▪ Ensure routine day-to-day tasks are completed, including cleaning kitchen equipment, work surfaces, kitchen floors and storage areas, as directed by the Supervisor.
▪ Ensure waste is controlled with regard to preparation and cooking.
▪ Maintain the highest standards of health, hygiene and safety.
▪ Manage and control all food, including receiving and checking stock, checking equipment and materials are used correctly and closely monitoring portion control.
▪ Ensure that routine data is collected as required and that all daily checks, including temperature control during production, preparation, service and storage are carried out properly.

Education, Experience and Knowledge:

▪ Grade 10 or equivalent; valid Food Safe Certificate – all Levels.
▪ Valid WHIMS Certificate; satisfactory Criminal Record Check and a Drug Test if requested.
▪ Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
▪ Thorough knowledge of the methods of preparing meats and vegetables.
▪ Thorough knowledge of cooking times and temperatures for various foods and methods of preserving nutritional value.
▪ Thorough knowledge and experience in gathering, preparing and preserving traditional foods.
▪ Excellent personal hygiene; excellent knowledge of the principles of food sanitation.
▪ Ability to perform physical labor-type duties; flexible, committed and enthusiastic.

Preschool Assistant (Temporary Full-Time)

The Lax Kw'alaams Wap Suwilaawksa has an immediate opening for a temporary full-time Preschool Assistant. The successful person with the direction of the Preschool Teacher will assist with the overall supervision of a group of preschool children. He/she will perform activities that ensure the safety, involvement, and creativity of everyone in the group. You will work cooperatively with the teacher to discuss and aide in the implementation of daily plans in accordance with the current curriculum and incorporating the school education standards.
Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
▪ With the direction of the Preschool Teacher, conduct daily small-group activities for an assigned group of children, sharing responsibility for large-group activities and using appropriate adult/child interactions strategies with all children.
▪ Share responsibility in the preparation of Daily Plans and the preparation of teaching materials.
▪ Assume responsibility for a classroom at any given time.
▪ Observe and/or participate in parent-teacher conferences, if requested.
▪ Provide coverage for breaks for other staff members, if requested.
▪ Supervise daily lunch and playground activities, field trips and walks.
▪ Promote individualized attention for children by freeing the Preschool Teacher from routine duties.
▪ Work with the Preschool Teacher in all activities, including but not limited to housekeeping, meal service and record keeping.
