The Lax Kw'alaams Band has openings for a Full-Time Brighter Futures Youth Worker. The successful candidate will deliver services in a Culturally Safe setting and respectful manner that complies with current Brighter Futures policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Be active and engage in all Program activities during shift including community events or collaborated programs with other Community departments.
  • To spend at least 75% of your time to build purposeful relationships with the Youth who access Brighter Futures Programming
  • Be a positive role model for all youth in the community.
  • To empower Youth through a process of reflective practice to find their own direction in life.
  • To encourage Youth to make a difference in Lax Kw’alaams
  • Act as an informal point of contact for Youth, to be a friendly welcoming face within the community and someone the Youth can trust to talk to.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with the Youth, acting as their advocate if needed whilst ensuring appropriate confidentiality and the maintenance of professional boundaries at all times.
  • Assist the Lead Youth Worker in running and engaging activities either as a part of a group or one to one.
  • Facilitate programs and workshops with youth ages 7 – 29.
  • Work as part of a team and as an individual to provide a safe environment. Report any Health and Safety or safeguarding concerns to the Brighter Futures Coordinator
  • Able to facilitate conflict resolutions between youth when needed.
  • Must be responsible and ethical, shows compassion and empathy.
  • Facilitate or willing to learn to facilitate Cultural Harvesting, Traditional Arts & Mental Health programs.
  • Maintain accurate logs and compile statistical records to support program needs and inform ongoing program development and evaluation
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills with Youth, professionals and agencies showing consideration and respect for their views, ensuring that all communication, including on issues that may be emotionally distressing, is dealt with in an appropriate manner and conveyed in ways acceptable to the recipient.
  • Attend team meetings.
  • Work evenings & weekends.
  • Clean up materials and space used at the end of each program.
  • Travel up to 2 weeks with youth – ie. Canoe Journey, Seaweed camp, Conferences etc.

Education, Experience and Knowledge:

  • Must have completed minimum grade 12.
  • First Aid and CPR preferred or willing to take.

Job Purpose:
The Truth and Reconciliation Manager will be responsible for developing research and support systems for Lax Kw’alaams in response to the effects of Residential Schools, Indian Hospitals, Day schools, Boarding homes and other institutions which have altered the ways of life for Lax Kw’alaams. Supporting the development and implementation of community-led strategies to identify, investigate, protect and commemorate residential schools, cemeteries, and hospital sites. This position will report to the Chief Administrative Officer and work closely with a Community Advisory Council which will dictate directions and create actions to be implemented.
The successful candidate will be instrumental in managing the activities of the project team, including survivor support, community engagement, research, recording oral testimony, land scanning, federal and provincial reporting, budgeting, Nation-to-Nation communications, collaboration and managing contracts with service providers.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure proper confidentiality practices are followed throughout the program area
  • Ensure proper communication about available services to all IRS survivors

Required Job Skills Knowledge and Experience:

  • Strong interpersonal and compassionate communications skills
  • Must have experience working with survivors and intergenerational survivors of residential school in a healing and health support setting
  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma, or equivalent in post-secondary and other training, in health, social services, cultural studies, psychology, project management, or other relevant fields

  • Must understand Tsimshian cultural protocols

The successful candidate will screen Lax Kw’alaams Health Program clients and capture pertinent data, prepare and review a variety of memorandums, correspondence, reports, public notices, permits and documents as assigned. They will complete various forms, and prepare and distribute reports for review and use. The Health Administrative assistand will prepare and maintain a variety of forms used by health programs, and will work closely with the CHR and the MHT. This position reports to the Health Director.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Work in collaboration with the health care team 
  • Collaborate with other health professionals in a polite, courteous manner
  • Knowledgeable with computer systems and can navigate these systems easily
  • Maintain client confidentiality, must be responsible and ethical
  • Attend and participate in team meetings
  • Prepare monthly reports as needed for the Lax Kw’alaams Health Programs
  • Track individual interventions and disseminate to all necessary parties
  • Provide clerical support to assist designated health department staff in the completion of their duties and responsibilities
  • Answer questions and provide information to the public and other Band departments
  • Assist clients and member to complete  forms as needed.
  • Maintain a variety of files and filing systems, division records retention system and materials storage and/or destruction; prepare, maintain and update various records; research and verify information as requested
  • Prepare materials and correspondence for distribution within the Band  and to other related external businesses and governmental agencies; photocopy, mail or fax materials as necessary.
  • Screen and direct calls and visitors as appropriate; may assist in scheduling travel arrangements, reservations, daily operations or meetings as assigned
  • Enter and verify a variety of data into the computer system including but not limited to expenditure requests, vendor file data, journal vouchers and cashed checks; backup computer as assigned.
  • May order print and non-print materials and research vendor prices as appropriate.
  • May maintain outstanding purchase orders for office supplies and associated materials; prepare books for circulation as assigned.
  • May oversee billing, ordering, maintain repair and maintenance contracts on all Health Department  business equipment.
  • Sort and distribute incoming and outgoing mail and all interdepartmental mail.
  • Attend various Health department functions as required; prepare agendas and associated materials
  • May participate in annual department budget preparation.
  • May participate in a variety of activities involving travel between various Band facilities and to other related external business and government agencies which may include collecting and distributing mail and picking up materials and supplies.

Summer Student Supervisor Term

The Lax Kw'alaams Band has an immediate opening for a temporary full-time Summer Student Supervisor.
Under the direction of the Director of Infrastructure, the Summer Student Supervisor will oversee the
management of summer students, including the mentored work experience students. They will plan, prepare, organize, and communicate written reports and verbal skills necessary. They will also liaise with other managers in monitoring the summer students in the employment summer program.
This is a term position that is expected to start on July 24, 2023 and end on August 25, 2023.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

The Lax Kw'alaams Band and the Ferry, Spirit of Nicola, have an immediate opening for an On Call Relief Mate. The successful candidate will have to attend mandatory training, follow instructions and be able to work in challenging conditions. The position will cover the Ferry services between the Lax Kw’alaams and Prince Rupert Communities. You are knowledgeable of applicable navigation equipment and techniques; international, federal and provincial regulations, safety and emergency procedures, and ship handling principles.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
▪ You serve as an Officer in the conduct of deck department activities
▪ Loading / unloading vehicles and passengers
▪ Navigation, ship husbandry
▪ Passenger/vehicle safety
▪ Equipment inspections
▪ Attend all mandatory training
▪ Responding to emergency situations
▪ Training with crew in fire, safety, and boat drills
