The Lax Kw'alaams Band and the Ferry, Spirit of Nicola, have an immediate opening for an On Call Relief Mate. The successful candidate will have to attend mandatory training, follow instructions and be able to work in challenging conditions. The position will cover the Ferry services between the Lax Kw’alaams and Prince Rupert Communities. You are knowledgeable of applicable navigation equipment and techniques; international, federal and provincial regulations, safety and emergency procedures, and ship handling principles.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
▪ You serve as an Officer in the conduct of deck department activities
▪ Loading / unloading vehicles and passengers
▪ Navigation, ship husbandry
▪ Passenger/vehicle safety
▪ Equipment inspections
▪ Attend all mandatory training
▪ Responding to emergency situations
▪ Training with crew in fire, safety, and boat drills
▪ Federal and provincial regulations, safety and emergency procedures, ship handling principles
▪ Directing and participating in vessel drills
▪ Maintaining weekly Safety and Fire Equipment checks
▪ Standing watch on the bridge while vessel is underway
▪ Assisting the captain on watch with various other tasks that are deemed necessary for the safe and
proficient operation of the Ferry
▪ Provide manual labor on various other tasks and assignments as required
▪ Maintain the equipment on the job site, using and storing them properly and securely at the end of
every shift
▪ Follow a timekeeping system, training and protocols as directed by the Supervisor
▪ Perform all other tasks within the scope of the position and as assigned

Qualifications:
▪ Mate, Near Coastal; and a valid seafarer’s medical.
▪ Valid Chief Mate 150 tons certificate
▪ Valid marine basic or better first aid certificate
▪ Must be able to bend, stretch, twist, or reach with body, arms and/or legs
▪ Care about the quality of work; can work well on a team and follow safety standards
▪ Self-motivated, ability to work safely and independently without constant supervision
▪ Able to work outdoors/ indoors and in stressful environments, in all weather conditions

Job Purpose:

The Truth and Reconciliation Manager (“the Manager”) will be responsible for developing research and support systems for Lax Kw’alaams in response to the effects of Residential Schools, Indian Hospitals, Day schools, Boarding homes and other institutions which have altered the ways of life for Lax Kw’alaams. The Manager supports the development and implementation of community-led strategies to identify, investigate, protect and commemorate residential schools, cemeteries, and hospital sites. The Manager will report to the Chief Administrative Officer and work closely with a Community Advisory Council which will dictate directions and create actions to be implemented.

This position is a temporary term position based upon available project funding. The Manager is instrumental in managing the activities of the project team, including survivor support, community engagement, research, recording oral testimony, land scanning, federal and provincial reporting, budgeting, Nation-to-Nation communications, collaboration, and managing contracts with service providers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Recruits and manages truth and reconciliation project staff;
  • Oversees work plan and monitors activities;
  • Evaluates project activities;
  • Creates cultural start-ups;
  • Establishes cooperation and collaboration agreements;
  • Participates in national and provincial meetings;
  • Coordinates community engagement;
  • Ensures a safe, culturally safe, secure work environment;
  • Responsible for orienting, providing scope of work, and training plan for teammembers.
  • Communicates job expectations, work plans, monitoring, coaching, counselling, andfollowing HR policy guidelines and collective agreement with project staff.

  • Manages the process and ensures research findings/reports/presentations are announced anddistributed;
  • Coordinate with different companies to provide technical expertise from ground penetratingradar consultants, other scanning tools, archaeologists, communications, legal, excavationand other professional services as required;
  • Plan cultural supports and cleansings for community when needed;
  • Ensure proper confidentiality practices are followed throughout the program area;
  • Ensure proper communication about available services to all IRS survivors;
  • Ensure compliance with Lax Kw’alaams policies and procedures;
  • Ensure confidentiality is maintained on all client and membership information andmaterials; and,
  • Comply with health and safety policies, procedures and protocols and provide leadershipfor the monitoring and enforcing of regulations that apply to community workplaces.

Required Job Skills Knowledge and Experience:

  • Strong interpersonal and compassionate communications skills;
  • Must have experience working with survivors and intergenerational survivors ofresidential school in a healing and health support setting;
  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma, or equivalent in post-secondary and other training, in health, social services, cultural studies, psychology, project management, or other relevant fields;
  • Experience supervising and coordinating a team and producing reports;
  • Must understand Tsimshian cultural protocols;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
  • Knowledge of Tsimshian culture and traditions;
  • Knowledge of Indian residential schools and their impact of First Nations;

Under the Health Director's direct supervision, the successful candidate will be responsible for the planning, facilitating and implementing a program to promote a healthy lifestyle, free of substance use for Lax Kw'alaams community members.

Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
▪ Promote Community Health Development through the provision of education and awareness of the
negative effects of drugs and alcohol; provide educational workshops
▪ Initiate referrals to appropriate Treatment Centre's as needed;
▪ Recommend and provide alternatives to the use of alcohol and drugs (social, cultural, recreational
activities that will involve the client and/or their families);
▪ Develop and maintain a library of resource material for use by the recovering client;
▪ Assist individuals in their quest for sobriety (researching suitable rehabilitation, assisting with
admittance, follow-up care, etc.)
▪ Establish support groups within the Band as required;
▪ Develop an aftercare program for those clients returning from treatment to avoid relapse;
▪ Schedule appointments with clients to assist with recovery
▪ Reporting as required by the funding agency, Mayor and Council
▪ Perform other tasks within the scope of the position.

Education, Experience and Knowledge:
▪ Post-Secondary Diploma in a related field (Social Service Worker, Child and Youth Worker, addictions
counselling, etc.); a Master's Degree is desirable. A combination of education and relevant experience
may be considered.
▪ Strong working knowledge of First Nations culture.
▪ Ability to demonstrate a commitment to embodying a healthy lifestyle.
▪ Previous experience in a health-related field will be considered an asset.
▪ Valid driver's license with reliable transportation.

  • Process bi-weekly payroll, ensuring timekeeping information for all employees such as overtime, vacation and sick leave arecorrectly entered and approved and appropriate deductions for El, CPP, shared contributions to group insurance, pensionand other deductions are computed.
  • Reconcile bi-weekly payroll for accuracy and completeness.
  • Manage compensation packages using payroll software.
