Location: Lax Kw’alaams, BC Reporting to: Chief Administrative Officer
The Lax Kw’alaams Band has an immediate opening for a permanent full-time Director of Recreation. The successful person is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating a variety of recreational programs that incorporate the culture and traditions of the Lax Kw’alaams people and promote pride in individuals, families and the community.
The position is responsible for supervision and scheduling of various recreation support staff and service providers, facility programming management and development, work planning (inclusive of budgeting), promotion, delivery and evaluation. This position coordinates all program scheduling for the facility and assists with various community events.
Duties and Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
Develop, implement and evaluate regularly scheduled traditional, aboriginal sport and other recreational and leisure
activity programming and coordinate special events (i.e., community celebrations, holiday events and contributes to
general assemblies) to meet community needs, ensuring equitable access to programming and events for individuals
of all levels, ages, abilities and genders;
Plan, implement and maintain facility schedules areas for all programs and activities, including regularly scheduled
programming, seasonally based programming, and special events such as community celebrations, ensuring
necessary resources (human, equipment, material, financial and other) are available for the successful delivery of the
program, event or activity;
Develop and implement an asset maintenance control system for equipment, material and supplies, scheduling for
repair or disposal. (i.e., inventories of materials and supplies for safeguarding assets, lockout tag-out system for
damaged equipment). Ensure the safety of recreational areas, facility and equipment are accounted for and secured
at all times;
Manage department staff, including regular supervision, staff scheduling and performance management;
Conduct, as necessary, needs assessments to determine and develop culturally appropriate recreational programming needs of the community;
Perform all other tasks within the scope of the position, as assigned.
Education, Experience and Knowledge:
Diploma in Recreational Leadership, Recreation Management;
Considerable experience managing recreation programming, including facility scheduling, implementing and
evaluating programs and services offered, preferably in a community context;
Successful experience scheduling, supervising and managing staff;
Financial management experience, including overseeing a budget;
Current First Aid & CPR;
Excellent interpersonal skills; be a positive role model;
Must have a demonstrable ability to lead and motivate staff; to plan and organize work activities;
Strong organization skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and tight timelines;
Valid BC drivers’ license with clean driver’s abstract;
Provide a current Criminal Record Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Screening as a condition of employment.
