As the weather warms up, wildlife may move through nearby yards, roads, trails, beaches, and community spaces.

Community members are encouraged to help reduce wildlife conflicts by securing attractants such as garbage, food scraps, pet food, barbeques, and fish waste. Please keep pets close, give wildlife space, and make your presence known when walking through areas with low visibility.

As recommended by the Lax Kw’alaams Fire Department, anyone travelling into remote or wilderness areas, including Tuck Road and Bay Road, is encouraged to carry appropriate wildlife deterrents, such as bear spray and/or bear bangers, and know how to use them safely before heading out.

If you see a bear, cougar, or other wildlife, stay calm, do not run, and slowly back away while giving the animal a clear path to leave.

Please report wildlife encounters or incidents to the Lax Kw’alaams Fire Hall and the BC Conservation Officer Service.
