SMALL VESSEL MACHINERY OPERATOR PROGRAM

This 2-week course, taught 5 days each week Monday-Friday, is an introductory marine engineering course that will prepare you for the Transport Canada (TC) Small Vessel Machinery Operator exam. On successful completion of the TC exam, you will hold a Small Vessel Machinery Operator Certificate of Competency unlimited as Chief Engineer or Watchkeeping Engineer on a commercial vessel, with the following limitations:
Passenger Vessel:
- Less than 1,500 kW – Sheltered Waters & Near Coastal Class 2, less than 6 hours duration
- Less than 750 kW – Sheltered Waters & Limited Near Coastal Class 2
Cargo Vessel:
- Less than 2,000 kW – Sheltered Waters & Near Coastal Class 2, less than 6 hours duration
Tug:
- Less than 3,000 kW – Sheltered Waters & Near Coastal Class 2, less than 6 hours duration
- Less than 500 GRT – No more than five nautical miles from a sheltered dock
Students will learn shipboard safe practices, emergency procedures, fire prevention and control, lifesaving equipment operation, firefighting, pollution prevention, watchkeeping, language use, legal compliance, propulsion systems (conventional, hybrid, alternative), machinery operation and maintenance (main and auxiliary), pumping systems, generators and control systems, battery types (lead-acid, lithium), internal combustion engines, marine fuel types (conventional, low flashpoint), lubricants, cooling and hydraulic systems, electricity, and pneumatic systems.

- Ages 18 +
- VALID Proof of Ancestry CANNOT BE EXPIRED
- VALID Driver’s License
- Complete TRICORP Application Package
- Willingness to commit to program schedule
