DID YOU ATTEND SCHOOL OUTSIDE OF YOUR COMMUNITY AND BOARD/LIVE IN A BOARDING/PRIVATE HOME?
IF SO, YOU MAY BE ENTITLED TO COMPENSATION/PAYMENT UNDER A NEW CLASS ACTION RECENTLY APPROVED BY THE COURT, FOR THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE BOARDING HOMES PROGRAM.
- The Boarding Homes Compensation Claims Process is expected to open sometime this Spring or early Summer. Lawyers are being encouraged to assist former Boarding Home (BH) students with their claims to ensure they get proper advice and assistance in putting forth their claims. There will be no charge/no legal fee.
- The Boarding Homes Class Action Compensation Process is for First Nation, Metis or Inuit students who had to leave their communities for schooling and were placed in private homes/Boarding Homes by the Federal Government. There will be a Claims Application process through a Claims Administrator website, similar to the Day Schools Claims Process.
- In the upcoming claims process, a claim can be made for $10,000 for being placed/living in a Boarding Home. And, if a person suffered mistreatment/harm/abuse in a BH, they may claim additional compensation up to $200,000 depending on the mistreatment/harm/abuse suffered.
