Applications for rental of eight units in the new Lax Kw’alaams elders housing development are now being accepted. These homes include studio and one-bedroom units and all units are furnished, including in-suite washer/dryer and kitchen appliances. Rent for the units will be set at the lesser of:
- 25 percent of gross household income; or
- Average market rent for rural areas of B.C. ($562 for studio units and $642 for one-bedroom units)
Please note that pets are not permitted.
The rental application is available electronically here. Hard copies can be picked up at the Band office in Lax Kw’alaams or at the Business Development office in Prince Rupert. Applications must be completed and submitted in person at the Band office in Lax Kw’alaams or the Business Development office in Prince Rupert, or emailed to Erminio Pucci ([email protected]) by 5:00 p.m. on May 15.
To be eligible for the Lax Kw’alaams elders homes the applicant must be at least 65 years of age on June 1, 2019.
The Housing Coordinator will evaluate each application based on the criteria in the Lax Kw’alaams Housing Policy. The Housing Coordinator has limited discretion in the selection of applicants. The criteria that will be evaluated include:
- Waiting time that applicants have spent waiting for band-housing
- Household type
- Household size
- Current household condition
- Emergency
The Housing Coordinator, in collaboration with the Lax Kw’alaams Housing Committee, will notify the applicant in writing if she/he is eligible for the elders housing, including where the application sits on the waiting list. Priority will be given to those in greatest need.
The waiting list for the elders housing program will be updated at least once annually. Applicants are responsible for keeping their information up to date.
