The Lax Kw’alaams Fisheries Program recently received funding through New Relationship Trust to study the Dungeness crab populations in the territory. Little is known about the health of local crab populations, and even less is known about the impacts of commercial and recreational fisheries on this important resource.
Traps will be set in Big Bay and Stumaun Bay once a month from October 2014 – October 2015. We will be collecting information on size of the crabs, the number of females and males in the area, their shell condition, any injuries they have and when the molting periods are.
